Two stroke Suzuki LT50 Quad Wont Run After Rebuild.

Seasons greetings everyone. Im trying to rebuild a 1984 Suzuki LT50 Quad for my young nephews to ride. It came to me as a real pocket money junker but I thought id have a go at getting it running again. Since then i've spent more than enough money to have bought a new one! Oh well. Im not the first and I wont be the last.

After cleaning the carb' and the fuel tank i did get the thing to fire up but it ran erratically so i rebuilt the engine. New cylinder and piston and i tidied up the ignition system as the magneto wasnt mounted properly, due to stripped threads. After that the little bike didnt run quite right but I was able to ride it briefly, but now its very hard to keep running. It will fire with a sharp tug on the starter cord and might run for a couple of seconds but then it will stop. Also its very smokey from the exhaust.

Ive now put a brand new mikuni carb on it. Tried to run it from an auxiliary tank. Put a different exhaust on it and still no difference.

Clearly i'm missing something so would appreciate it if anyone here would help point me in the right direction to curing it. Hope to hear from you soon.

Hi. Yes its two stroke. It has fuel via both the tank and an auxiliary tank. It has a bit fat blue spark. And although I cant easily check the compression, it's all new. New crank seals. New cylinder and gaskets and it's all torqued down properly.

Ill have a better look at the crank seals tomorrow and take the exhaust off to check that they piston hasn't become scored.... I have also put a new air filter on it, but I wonder if that's having an effect. Will put the old one back in tomorrow as it ran much better with the old one on it.

Just tried running it without the air filter in. The new airfilter is saturated with oil and fuel but with the filter removed i can get the bike to run and idle...... but.....

..... the throttle lever doesnt have any effect at all and the engine revs like crazy every 10 seconds or so before dropping back to idle speed. Are we getting closer to finding the problem?

ive got the carb needle set to the second from top position and i havent yet got the engine warm enough to set either the air screw or the mixture screw, but theyre sitting at 2 1/2 turns from bottom.

Getting quite a lot of smoke from somewhere around the crankcase, but it's hard to tell where it's coming from and it's cold and dark outside. Will return with a bottle of soapy water spray in the morning.

I've a feeling that either the crank case or the cylinder aren't mating properly so I'll strip it down and do it again.
