Victory In Vermont - My Third License Plate Arrived!

I went and checked my S90 value by telephone with Vermont. They had the tax pegged at about $55 plus $48 for the plate. I decided to go with a Florida title and registration for $160. I should save some money every year I renew and I have a title.

Yeah in AZ tho without a title you have to jump through the hoops of a bonded title etc. So typically I go the Vermont route for just under $100 and use that for a year. Then just before it expires I go to the AZ DMV and get my title and one year registration for $35. It works out well for me.

Do you need to do any bonded title business in FL if you do not have the title?

The thing is I had the last registration on that bike in NY (1973). They gave me some grief about the first digit on the reg., saying it was a "5" and not an "S". Anyway, I had to go over to the district DMV to have it verified (I guess the Deputy Sherriff's validation was no good.) and the gentleman there just rolled his eyes and asked for a picture of him on the bike. He had no problem with it.

Just curious, do they ask a reason why the bike has Vermont plates in your name? I'm gonna be doing the same in a couple O'months w/my bike, If she ask me that question; right now my answer is MYOB biatch.

Just tell her you like Ben and Jerry's, ALOT... And pick it up right from the plant on your bike.
But the odometer only reads 278 miles. I know... i'll tell her I ride it there and then push it back home; backwards.:21:
Glad we figured that one out.:4:

Or just tell them it's because they don't give you a hard time in Vermont when you try to LEGALLY register your motorcycle. The DMV should be helpful when folks are trying to make their vehicles legal. I can't figure out why they would be trying to make it difficult. Tell us how to do it, then allow us to get it done.

Nah I've got not one questions why. They just run through the motions and roll with it.

I am sure you could say something like, well I have family there and over the summer, winter whatever I bought some bikes while visiting. I wanted to get on and ride them in the nice weather so I got it registered there which they allow for out of state residents.

Or yes MYOB biatch will work just as well.

Wow just found this thread after posting a new one asking for anyone thats done this lol. I'm in Az. as well and going to try this for my 1970 ct70. Thanks for posting that this actually works!

Cool man!! Good luck, just follow the steps and you'll be good to go. Make sure the AZ DMV doesnt try and talk you into doing a straight transfer of the registration only. Inform them Vermont doesnt title bikes 15 years or older blah blah blah and this is in the place of a title. They will frown, go look at a book, and then issue you your title. Good times!!

Let `em frown all they like, it only lasts a second and you leave that with them. You take the title home with you...for life.:16:

Exactly!!! One lady even said, "Thats just a notice I need the actual registration." I politely said, "That is in fact the registration, its just on the full piece of paper with perforations that I just didnt detach." She frowned checked with her boss and then started typing without saying anything. I had a title 2 mins later.

This all sounds very promising. I have only just begun the process. The scariest thing for me is trying to find out if my VIN has been reported stolen by any state. I've had the bike for over 30 years and my parents and I bought it from a friend of a student my mom was currently teaching in Jr. High School. Her student was a bit of a hoodlum and I have no idea who his friend was. It very well could have been on the up and up but it seems like such a risk. I just want to finally have a title.

I've searched my parents house and they have no idea if there was a bill of sale or title or where either might be. They're in their 80's now and they have no memory of the event. So far my state DMV title check came back with "no record found" for that VIN. I think I can do a VIN check in my neighboring state without much suspicion.

Can/should I take just the frame to the police station to reduce the risk of them confiscating the entire bike? I've got Thousands invested in parts and too many hours to count and I'm just getting started in the reassembly process. I think if I can get past the potential theft concerns, I'd be home free for the rest thanks to Vermont. Any advice?

What do people do who just buy frames?...buy small to cut their losses? I suppose I could just tell them I only have the frame, but if my frame comes up stolen, I suppose I could always buy another frame and hope for the best, but now I lose my matching engine #. Maybe they'll start asking about WHERE I got the frame - I'd need an answer.

If I let it all be, I keep the whole bike but it but I never get to license or get to feel like it's really mine, even though it's been MY bike for 30+ years. Such a dilemma.

Run your VIN through the NICB web site - National Insurance Crime Bureau. That will at least tell you if there was a theft claim on any insurance policy for it.

I had hell in Texas getting my 70 titled I had to go through the bonded title process. You can purchase a surety bond and the event it was stolen you would recover your losses. I purchased mine for 6000 and it cost me $150

I think I tried that but it seems I read that that database doesn't go anywhere near that far back.

I use it all the time. I'm not sure if the records actually go that far back but it gives you a form you can print out for "peace of mind".

I hope to go to the state dmv in Lincoln on Wednesday and start the vin check on my Hk1 to get a Vermont plate/title. I'll let you know how it goes. A guy I have bought a few bikes from out in Hastings claimed the Vermont system worked for his buddy. I've wasted more money on dumber ideas, so... what the heck.

The Nebraska system is REALLY TOUGH to get anything done.

What NADA value is the Vermont DMV current using (Good or Fair)? I know this may have changed recently. I'm trying to avoid any possible kick back or delay when filing.
