After asking about this bike for years, I finally talked a very old friend into selling it to me. I have been wanting to build one so I already have a picture in my head of what I want it to look like when it’s done, so it was pretty cool to finally get it home and put the wheels in motion. When I picked it up, he threw in a brand-new carburetor, and within an hour I had the bike up and running.

Before tearing it down for paint, powdercoat and some new parts I figured it deserved at least one proper ride. That ride didn’t last long before I realized the obvious, if I was going to ride this thing and actually enjoy it, it was going to need more power. I’ve always been a fan of the LIFAN-style Chinese 125 engines. I run several of them in my small Hondas, and they’ve proven to be reliable, smooth, and just powerful enough to make riding fun without overdoing it. Naturally, that became the plan. A little digging led me to a kit from Spangler’s that allows the factory pull-start to be mounted to an aftermarket engine, which neatly solves the biggest hurdle in the swap. With that problem out of the way, the rest of the build started falling into place.

I’ve already ordered a Maier front and rear fender kit, complete with factory-style blue decals, along with a blue seat cover featuring the iconic “70” on the side. To finish it off, I plan on a set of aluminum wheels wrapped in street tires that will be next on the list. Let the fun begin.

I even played around with some AI to try and see what it will look like when finished and it did a pretty good job.

Be sure to double check that the neck/backbone is straight before you send it off to powder. Easiest way to tell is the front fender scrapes the cylinder head. I believe there is a measurement from axle to axle as well but can remember it.

How's the tank look? It's 50/50 if they have pinhole leaks. Repop tanks are available.

Don't forget the intake for the carb on the 125. Gotta clear the frame.

Thanks for all the info. I’m fortunate enough to know the full background on this little bike, and I can say it was never really abused. It spent most of its life as a dragstrip pit bike, and then for the last 20 or so years it just sat covered in the back of my buddy’s garage. The tank is in great shape overall, aside from a dent on the side that looks like it came from the fork tube contacting it. I am gonna check the fork stop and address that problem before it goes to powder coat. I am sending the tank to Texas to have Davmo push the dent out before it goes to my painter, Walter, to get whatever bodywork it will still need and then the white paint. I’m going to do some digging to see what everyone is doing for intakes. If it comes down to cutting one up to get the angle and height right and then welding it back together, I’ll go that route.

Have any of you guys tried the big round Z50R tank on one of these? I’ve seen pictures of them, and I actually have one that’s like new off a clone bike I stripped for parts. Spangler sells an adapter that makes it a bolt-on setup. I may just have both tanks painted white and see which one I like better on the bike.

Guys,
Any of you have much experience with a rear disc brake? I am not expecting this little bike to be a rocket, but I think I may want a little more stopping power then the factory cable driven drum brake. I am definitely looking for some opinions here, because if I am going to need to modify or weld anything up I would like to fit and make everthing work now before I start to pretty everything up. Would even consider a front disc and leave the back drum if it would be cleaner. Need some options.

Anyone know who makes this front disc brake set up? I see it on a lot of the bikes on Spanglers, but they have no listing of it that I can find.

I finally started getting some parts in for the little bike. I think by the weekend I should have enough to mock it up and kind of get a feel for what it will look like when finished. Once I fit everything and make sure it all will work as planned I will pull it completely apart for Paint and powder coat. Starting to get a little excited about the build now.

The plastics, seat cover, decals, bubble tank adapter and Nibbi carb came in this afternoon. I forgot to take pictures before I left work of some of the parts, but will add them tomorrow.

I stayed a little late after work and mocked up all the parts I have just to see how this thing is shaping up—and wow. No doubt in my mind now, the bubble tank (Z50R) looks 1000% better than the long, skinny stock tank. Totally changes the bike. The blue and white combo is outstanding. I
did find one issue today the front forks are bent, but no big deal. Scored a clean set on eBay for $85 and already pulled the trigger.
For fun, I even had AI finish the paintwork just to preview it, and now I’m even more pumped. This build is coming together better than I expected. Can’t wait to keep pushing it forward. The last couple of pictures are AI

Do any of you guys know where I can find the plug that goes in the pullstart sidecover? I think it is called the timing inspection plug. I don't care if it is new or used.

I’ve been sitting on a 125cc engine I pulled off an SSR dirt bike that I literally found in someone’s trash while test-driving a truck at work. I converted it over to semi-auto and already had most of the parts on hand, with the exception of a heavy-duty clutch, which I picked up from TB Parts. I also added a brand-new NIBBI carb.
Overall, the build came together pretty easily. The only real disappointment has been the pull-start kit from (Spangler’s) HondaATC70.com. The kit came with zero instructions, and the billet catch/drive doesn’t center on the flywheel at all—the center bore is way too large. When I asked if there was a spacer or anything to help center it, I was told they just “center it the best they can” before drilling and tapping. That didn’t sit well with me, so I’m taking it to my buddy Jimmy, who’s a machinist, and having him make a proper fixture so it can be done correctly.

Tonight before leaving work, I blasted both side covers, hand-sanded the center cases, and sprayed everything with VHT high-heat ceramic paint. They came out really good, and I can’t wait to get everything assembled and see how it all looks together. hopefully I will get it together tomorrow and take some pictures.

I went and visited my buddy Jimmy Meyers today and had him machine a billet ring for the flywheel to properly center the catch from the Spangler’s pull start kit. I feel much better knowing it’s now perfectly centered on the flywheel. I really wasn’t comfortable just eyeballing it and hoping for the best. I also put the engine back together, and I think it came out pretty good considering I dug this thing out of someones trash. I’m still waiting on a couple of parts to arrive before it’s completely finished, but it’s really close now.
I’m thinking about mounting it in the bike and getting everything hooked up so I can make it run before I tear it back down for paint and powder coating. I’d really like to take it for a short ride with the 125 just to see how it runs.
