Who has a Cub or Passport

First thread in the new area. I have a couple like most of my bikes in process. A CA100 (cub 50), a CA102 electric start version of the cub50.

Between my old man and me, we have 3 '81 Passports. Two are in really nice shape, the other, not so much, but it does run, and all three have titles. The old man had one for years, and then he stumbled on two more in a milkhouse, got the pair for $400. I took one, and after a good cleaning, a new battery, and two new tires, it's a good everyday rider. I think I have $450 in at, tops.

My better half just got her first scooter (2009 Metropolitan), so I needed something small to ride with her. Riding along side her 50cc scooter on my 1200cc Sportster... I'd never get out of first gear - no fun. I've always wanted a Passport, so I jumped on the beat-to-shit '81 that I found on CL. The blue color, my favorite. It has a laundry list of aesthetic and mechanical repairs I need to do, but it gets around as-is. Here's what's on the docket for phase 1:

- clutch rebuild, new plates, etc.
- cam chain replacement, new guides, etc
- new points
- new plug, coil cable, plug cap
- new headlight
- new battery
- full tuneup

Pretty much your typical "I just bought a POS Honda 70 off craigslist" repairs. Parts on the way!

I had a 84 passport that I bought for $150 with 107 original miles, unfortunately it was put away wet and in rough shape.
The engine ran perfect so I pulled it along with the wiring harness and installed it in my daughters 1969 z50. The electric start sure makes a nice edition to the bike.

I have a '67 (I think, have to check) CA102 w/ electric start. Just rolled over 500 miles last fall. Need to get it out and get it running again this spring and take a look at the electric start. Was sticking last year so I unhooked it and never used it. It sure is fun to cruise around the neighborhood on. I have a title for it, just don't currently have it licensed anymore. The story I was told from the 2nd owner, is that it was given by a Honda dealership as a promo, to a local pharmacy for making deliveries...? The pharmacy only used it that one summer and it sat in the basement until the mid 80's when the 2nd owner noticed it while painting the pharmacist's house in college and traded him labor for it.

Lost out on an 81 C70 passport yesterday. It looked to be in fair shape and it was running. I guess the other guy wanted it more. It sold for $415 and was in Tennessee. I'm in California so I would have to had to budget at least $250 more to ship it out here so I didn't want to spend more than $300 on it.

I was pretty bummed until last night when I found one about an hour from me. The guy says he wants $300 for it but it isn't running. They only have one pic of it but they assure me it is mostly rust free. I'm going to check it out this morning.

I checked out the passport listed at $300 that is about an hour drive fromo me today. The engine is missing the clutch side cover, kick start lever, shift lever, spark plug or wire. It would need a lot of work.

Sorry I don't know how to flip this pic right side up.

Parakeet Yellow '81 Passport bought a few years ago on CL for $243 with 243 miles on the clock. The fuel had dried to a solid, comparable to cured concrete. Been using it as a mule all this time to develop new electrical parts for Cubs/Passport.

What kind of stuff are you developing?

The new Half Wave Fearsome Extreme rectifiers are shipping. Its a virtually indestructible 20 Amp, 800 PIV, 2-terminal rectifier for the 6 Volt C70.
Work is progressing on the longer case version for the 12 Volt models.
A USB cell charger port is on the way.
A neutral lamp switch booster and an amplified starter relay are in the works.
An LED fuel gauge, LED Voltmeter, LED turn signal kit, LED tachometer, and electronic ignition module are in R&D.

Perhaps a plug-and-play 6V LED headlight bulb for the Z50/PC50/CT70/etc. could be in the future? One that doesn't require a voltage amplifier/cooling fan? I see a huge market for them!

The junction at the heart of an LED powerful enough to be a headlight, runs really HOT. A heat sink large enough to operate without a fan, is too large to fit in the headlamp bucket. With the headlight bucket lacking an air inlet and outlet, even a fan-cooled module overheats.

A liquid-cooled solution might work, it could carry heat out of the bucket and into the breeze. Seems complex and costly, though there are some computer components that might be slick. Even a pure mechanical solution needs to pump heat out of the bucket. Perhaps in the coming years we will see LED temperatures fall enough to make a good headlight for these tiny buckets.

For now I remain focused on building the 6VACR headlight Voltage regulators for standard bulbs, which have been available just over 3 years. Its a proven setup and it fits inside the headlight bucket. LED's are practical for the other bulbs on the bike.

I was rearranging the garage a bit today, so I had the girls out to get some sun. I decided I'd take a photo while I was at it.

There is a 72 C70 electric start, buried somewhere in the garage that is in the parts collecting stage (for about 5 years). Need forks installed, and it used to run, but does not now. I may have sheared off the flywheel key, as it has spark, tried three different carbs, and plenty of compression. But no start anymore.
Too busy with other bikes to get to this.

I am proud to say... I need to revive this thread!

I picked up an '82 Passport yesterday that is fairly complete for 200 bucks. Has 2670.4 miles on the odometer and a busted up legshield. Compression felt good and gas smelled like turpentine. Drained the gas that was in the tank, cleaned the plug, gave it a good shot of carb cleaner and it started on the 2nd kick! I have read stories like this but never understood until it happened to me! Jackpot baby! Picked up a new tube for the rear tire today and hope to give the tank and carb a good clean tomorrow with some fresh oil. Not sure what I'll do with this bike yet, but it should be fun for a couple months. I have dreams of flipping it for spending dough for a hot rod ct70 build I have been accumulating parts for, although... I hope the wife falls in love with it so we can keep it, i'm kinda torn already. How many bikes is too many again?

Oh, and it is the Red version with, I think, spray painted black covers. Seems all the covers were white with the red bikes??

I have a yellow one I bought last fall for $50.00 ,someone started to restore it ,it has been nicely painted ,brand new seat ,but unfortunately it had been passed around a bit and the engine is missing ,along with the leg shields ,axles and brake hubs .Another member here had parted one out and sent me the wheel parts I needed ,which was awesome !
