This one looks all original and has low miles & will ship. I've yet to see the 79 break $950, this one just might.

I think you might be right Adam. I'm not a real fan of the '79 color scheme, but this one is VERY NICE and 395 miles!

I bet it doesn't even make the reserve. Don't let your love goggles fool you. The exhaust is not original and the front tire appears to have been replaced with an aftermarket knock-off. The missing mirrors are another factor to consider. It appears that the side covers, rims and foot pegs have been repainted too. It appears to have been dressed up a little perhaps to improve the resale price.

Good eyes H.G. I didn't even spot the front tire. Definitely changed. What are you seeing with the exhaust? Is it just the wrong year gaurd or the whole thing? From what you've mentioned, it starting to appear to me that it took a hard spill. The rims looking so good, maybe they're OEM replacement, no mirrors, and the repainted side cover(there is no driver ankle wear on the paint, even for 395miles).

The exhaust guard should be all black (no chrome). It's still a nice bike but, not original. The more I look at it, the more I'm convince the seat cover has been replaced too. It has been laid over on it's left side. Both the left front and left rear turn signals have been tweaked. It could have fallen off its kick stand or a previous owner took a spill.

Are those phillips head screws in the engine guard holes. Is there supposed to be an engine guard or was it optional this year?

CJ...`78 was the last year for the engine guard.

I dunno, there are some really odd contradictions in this listing. Bill is right, the main heatshield should be black, "HONDA" shouldn't be grinning on the rear seat cover panel , and that's one goofy-looking front tire. OTOH, I don't see road rash on the turn signals...pretty tough to lay a bike down hard enough to bend the signals, without leaving a scratch. The points inspection cover appears to have a believable amount of scuffing for an original 395-mile example. And, since all of the cloud silver pieces are in similar (nicely uniform) condition, they might be wearing OEM paint. And yet, that painted kickstand spring kinda shouts restored for ebay sale!!!.

Easy enough to paint the muffler guard, since it's the correct holes & slots type. Can't see mirrors are being a deal breaker. Photography is where this one falls apart. Either the seller is clueless with a camera...or it's a case of misrepresentation by omission. Neither situation is likely to capture the interest of serious bidders. There should be at least an additional 4 good shots, one each of both sides & ends. If this is truly a 395-mile survivor, wouldn't you want to post a good detail shot of the speedo? The lack of adequate photos, oddball front tire and seat cover, makes one suspicious combo.

This one could be a screaming deal for $1K...or the kind of deal that sends one away, screaming.

There should be black rubber plugs instead of phillips screw in the engine guard bolt holes. If im not mistaken the carb appear to be after market as well, originals have the choke lever on the left side. The exhaust is incorrect year as it doesn't have the step out from the rear shock and the shield should be all black, the horn is the wrong year as well it should have the round holes, the acorn nuts holding the front fender, the air cleaner should have black covers not chrome and cant tell from the pics the whole assembly might be wrong i can't tell if the crank case breather hose/warm air intake hose is hooked into the air cleaner, also cant tell from the pics if the chain guard sticker is silver or black but the two 79s i used to own had a silver labels. seat is definitely wrong for the 79, if you have really good eyes the bolts are too shiny and looks like the have 8.8 on them. in the photo of the battery it looks like the exhaust has a patch?? the angles of the photos tells a story of it own, seller is being deceitful

The turn signals being a little tweaked on the bike isn't so surprising as anyone with one of these already knows. It's hard not to bump into the darn things just getting off or on the bike. I've gotten a few bruises on my legs and hips several times from my 78's over wide "outrigger" turn signals from just walking around the bike.

Here's my fork ear with correct horn and reflector....?
Definitely the right horn, not sure about the reflectors. I seem to vaguely remember the thin, black-backed, reflectors on the last `79 I had. However, I sold it over ten years ago and my memory isn't that good.

We are picking this one apart like buzzards. The more we're learning, the less I like this bike.
I share those exact thoughts. It's also become apparent that we've got some really observant folks on this board.

Right on H.G. Same here. I hope that sellers ears are burning. Need to learn to leave off the love goggles when trying to learn objectively(wish I would have done that more in my single days.lol).

Thank God, yes we do!!! Some folks know what to look for and others see what someone else would never notice. As a team, a deceitfull crooked prick would have to be pretty slick to pull one over on us.

Like racer said the horn is correct but i pretty sure the 79 didn't have rubber cup and the reflector was the thin flat black. You have to remember what Honda did from 78 to 79 to "reduce overhead" on the production of the 79. IE no engine cradle, painted fenders, and very little chrome etc, etc, so it doesn't surprise me Honda left out the rubber cup.

Yep, those flat black reflectors are on my 81' JH2 bike and for some reason the other style, AL/Rubber-cap were installed on my 79. Possible they had some left over from the 78's... anyway I'm gonna use them as I like em better.
