Good thinking - I checked, and all looks normal. I ordered a new bulb so I can eliminate the chance it's just the bulb.

Question about brake light - this seems crazy, any ideas welcomed! The bike came with a tail light bulb that appeared to have one burnt out filament. It wasn't the brake filament because the bulb lit up when the brake is pressed, but had no running tail light. So I did what anyone would do...

Thanks racerx, you are a font of bike wisdom. In fact I have new chain in hand and ready to get it on the bike with new sprocket. The old chain, as it happens, was almost good as new once cleaned and lubed, no noticeable stretch/looseness - just not quite long enough. It's a good learning...
