Direction of the top engine mounting bolt

I think I have been installing the top engine mounting bolt wrong on all my project bikes. Which side does the head of the bolt( with a short threaded section protruding off of the head ) go? Gear shifter side or kick starter side? Thanks, Kenny.

    '72 CT70 winter restore project

Well, I swapped out piston, cylinder and head on the Yellow 72' CT70 and it seems to run a lot better. I need to run it longer(later today) to make sure but what little I did, it revved out faster. It still doesn't idle right so looks like that may be in the carb(acts like an air leak). Also...

    New Winter project.

Thank goodness I'm in Tennessee. That snow would shut this state down. I'm a still quite few steps behind you on my winter project MountainMini.

    '72 CT70 winter restore project

I'm almost done with the first engine(running it with stock bore first then adding the 88cc cylinder and monster cam after knowing engine is fine) which I'm thinking of swapping into the candy yellow special frame to test ride and was wondering what is the best after market exhaust with stock...

    '72 CT70 winter restore project

Thanks for the info. The first engine I tore down was under a shed but with no carb mounted on it and the piston was stuck hard( busted the cylinder pressing it out) and a light layer of rust on everything inside(stroker candidate). The second engine was not under cover and without a sparkplug...

    '72 CT70 winter restore project

So the TB stroker crank is bringing the piston down the cylinder farther but not any higher. I will be running the stock head so do you think I can use the stock piston and can it take that much compression?

    '72 CT70 winter restore project

Well I tore apart the 2nd motor and it is surprisingly a lot better condition than the first. Ir still had oil in it after 30 years. So now my focus is getting it up and running. This one will get the 52mm cylinder and hot cam. I'm a little worried about the stator as there was no cover on...

    '72 CT70 winter restore project

I have been checking on the stock bore matched with the 51mm stroker crank and DR. ATV said the smallest bore you can use with that crank is 51mm. I was all in on that combo until that. Any thoughts?

    '72 CT70 winter restore project

Thanks for that excellent info. The crankshaft in this engine was slightly rusty and I was worried about reusing it. You've got me leaning toward option #2 now which I hadn't even thought about. I also like idea of having the torque over revving it out. Now let me see what I can find.

    '72 CT70 winter restore project

Since I got the cases split, what about going up to the 95cc cylinder and hot cam? I can get the cases bored.

I think they have been sitting there a while(20+years).

    '72 CT70 winter restore project

Thanks for the info guys. Probably leaning towards the 88cc stage 2 kit. I'm thinking I'll be pretty happy if it will do 50mph with me on it. The frame is at the body shop getting painted and should get it back in a couple of weeks. I'm reworking and polishing the forks and start reworking the...

    '72 CT70 winter restore project

I have also started a total rebuild project on a '72 CT70 that has been sitting for 30 years outside. I've torn it completely down and blasted and primed the painted parts. Taking a lot of pointers from the other threads. The engine was locked up tight but finally got it completely tore down. I...

    Runs great but won't idle

I am planning on restoring the red one but not sure about the blue one. I need to find someone to paint my candy yellow special bike and then this red one back original colors.
