Howdy All,

I’m attempting to bench test a stator that I’m working on. I’m unsure exactly where to put the probes. I’ve read contradicting opinions during a Google search, so I thought I’d try to clarify things. I’ll attempt to post a pic of what I have going on. My best guess it to check from the solder joint to the end of the wire that attaches to the points. I read somewhere that you need to test from the points wire to the body of the coil. Any help or advise is appreciated!!

You can check the coil just as you described - from the ring terminal (solder end) to the wire that attached to the points. Regarding what you've read, it's really the same check if the points are open. For what it's worth, I normally do both (check coil, check again at points) just to ensure the points close correctly. I've had a couple sets of points that had some sort of oil film on the contacts and needed to be cleaned in order to make good contact.

You should read ~1.5 ohms.

Thanks for the reply!! I’m still having a little trouble wrapping my head around this. I tried to test one of the coils by placing a probe on the terminal ring and wire before it routes out to the connector and got nothing. I then tested from the terminal to the connector plug and got a correct reading. I then took a reading from the other coil and got nothing. Apparently I’m missing something. I’ll post a few more pics of what I tried. I know my meter is pretty crappy, but I lent my good one out and haven’t seen it back yet. Hopefully this makes sense.

Turn the meter to the lowest setting. You won't get as accurate a read in the 2k ohm range. Personally to free up a hand, I would get an alligator clip and put one lead on the ring terminal And use the tension of the clip to hold it there. An intermittent correct reading might indicate a broken wire, which normally occurs only a couple windings in from the points connection side. Also a quality meter might benefit the precision of your results.

The brand new black electrical tape is suspect also.

X2 on enginedoctor's recommendation.

Another tidbit. The coil wires have a shellac/varnish coating. If you don't scrape off a spot, you'll never get a connection. But on the other hand, if you get correct readings at the 4 pin stator plug, no need to go any further.

Also, the individual coils for the lighting and charging circuit are less than 1 ohm each. Going from memory, somewhere in the range 0.5 to 0.7 ohms each.
