Using the original packing is a big mistake. It doesn't have to get wet to start the rust out process, there is something in the packing that makes it rust. No on would even notice header wrap under the original clamp. If anything you should worry about more about getting a numbers matching original carburetor instead of the cheapo replacement carb that is on it. That stands out like a sore thumb to a CT70 enthusiast or potential buyer.

I have a Roll of Header Wrap--I'll cut a pc and use that. There must be some sort of metallic material in the original wrap causing oxidation and Corrosion in that area.
I do have the Original Carburetor that came with the Bike-- Just need to Rebuild it.
In the meantime I picked up another H-- 1972- 3200 miles -- In Nice Condition and Runs Great!

I did a post a few years ago but couldn’t find it. Basically the original packing has something in it that rusts out the header pipe even if you keep it dry. I had a Grom that used a similar packing material but it didn’t create rust. It was slightly larger diameter so I cut it to make it like a “C” and used it for years without any rust buildup.
