Carb installation issues - help needed

Hello everyone. I've assembled many a CT in my day but i'm having a particularly difficult time on this particular CT70 and I don't know why. Maybe some of you with a lot of knowledge on parts and little differences can help me solve this.

I have a 1972 CT70H i'm putting back together. I have the original engine and airbox from the frame. I got a set of rubber boots front and back to airbox from a member here. The carb and intake came from a 1970 CT70H. I do have the proper heatstops for it as well.

Simply put, the combination I have will not go together. The way I've approached assembly is that I first mounted up the airbox with boots attached. Right off the bat I notice that the boot "droops" a little and is not square to the front. It's off by maybe 10 degrees and no amount of clocking the airbox is going to change that as I've already clocked it and pushed it back as far as it can possibly go. I then have the intake manifold and carb attached. The idea that I can align the carb spigot, push it back, and then put the bolts though the lower manifold into the head. Well, that's not going to work. The carb goes into the boot fairly easy and reaches a small lip in the boot and then we're a full 3/4" away from being able to align the manifold to the head. With a lot of straining i can close that gap to half the distance but you can see the boot bulging as a result and still not close enough. Even with removing my heatstop, it won't go together.

So, a few questions. First, are all of these boots the same? Second, are the carbs the same year to year? Were there any carbs from other bikes that look exactly the same but might be different size? Like maybe an early ATC? The carb came mounted to the engine, but nothing to say it was original I suppose.

I suspect that the intake boot has "098" in raised letters on one side? I have used that one before and it takes a lot of force get the carb to bolt up. And when you do get everything bolted together, it has a slight budge in the boot that is noticeable. As far as I know, the one with 098 showing on the side is for 78 and higher. I checked with NEVH some time back back to see if their AFT version was the same as the OEM Honda they offer and it is.

CHP has reproduced the one that was used for K0 - 77. I have used this one and the fit is much better, and is the only one that I have seen that is made and fits like the original boot.
