Wifey is keeping me busy with some work outdoors, but I did short rides yesterday and today.
Yesterday with the 102.5 jet it ran pretty good, but I could tell it wasn't right. It didn't want to start with the choke closed...but fired up with it open, no throttle. These engines seem to have a reputation with kicking back. I got a good dose of why. It's kicked back a few times on me thus far, but it got my attention once yesterday. It could hurt someone, for sure.
15 minute ride yesterday, ran pretty good, made a few tweaks...carb, clutch. Got good and hot, then I shut it off and dropped the oil. LOTS of stardust in the oil...more than I think I've ever seen before. But then I've never seen a brand new engines first oil change before either. But there was NO steel in that stardust...all aluminum as best I could tell.
Then, I installed a 110 main jet and moved the needle clip to center.
Today, with the 110 main jet, I rode it for a good 20 minutes...made it work a little...and it was workin great. I'm still really impressed with the way it revs...I'm gonna need to know exactly WHAT makes it rev, up and down, so quickly. Bigger valves? Cam profile? Lightweight oil slinger and flywheel? Maybe it's all of those..? I'll have to make a short video to show what I'm talkin about. I never buried the 50mph speedo, but I ran it right up TO 50 a couple times. That was as far as I wanted to push this new engine, still running 16/38 sprockets. It's really zippy. 3rd gear wheelies with only a small yank.
I'm certainly impressed with the Piranha. It runs every bit as well as my Honda 117. I'll get a better comparison once I get the gearing right. I couldn't find the 33tooth sprocket...I might have it on my ODB project...in storage. It shifts well too, no complaints there. I also didn't notice any excessive vibration, etc. Nice engine, so far.
Carb is working good. Props to you OLD CT...the jetting seems right. The air screw access is a problem. I think I might have ended up turning it almost all the way IN tho. I'll have to check it now that the engine is cool. There is a replacement screw available that is a thumb screw sort of thing. Suckers too expensive IMO, but I'll probably buy one anyway. IDK, once I get it set right, shouldn't need to mess with it much.
The air screw access sucks. Kicking the engine over at cold starts is a challenge...and kinda scary maybe. Otherwise, the engine runs and shifts VERY good IMO.
I'm going to look into a off the shelf brake pedal that works on a CT70. If none are available...that will go on the con list.
I'll make a short video to post when I can.
20 bucks at Tbolt...guess that aint too bad.
