The plastic knob bolts are not that expensive, just knock off the plastic knob and cut them flush with the bigger nut. If you are trying to save the handlebars, you can probably heat them up and remove old bolt.

I wasn't sure if there was a step on that stem that I wasn't seeing that would keep it from coming apart. I didn't want to crack the aluminum casting if I could avoid it. The bars are rusty but straight originals.

Does anyone know what the thread size is for the handlebar knobs? I need to order a Tap.
They measure .311 but appear to be metric threads.
I cut the old one's off and soaked the stubs in penetrating oil. I heated them up with a torch and they both broke flush with the insert in the bars without much effort so I will be attempting to drill out the remainder and will need to re-thread the inserts in the bars.
