1970 CT70 K0 red 5142 miles CT70E159073

I just brought this bike home, its the 3 speed auto K0 I believe. Bars are bent, tail lense broken, headlight bucket cracked, seat pan cracked, slight rust here and there - but none on the body. It came with a title, so monday I am hoping my state will allow me to title up current, hasn't been switched since 1982. It sat in a heated shed for 18 years, and hadn't been run, then the gas was cleaned out and the carb and it starts first kick. Supposedly the previous owner rode it to work and back everyday racking up 5k miles. But they're highway miles right? I really like it, I hope to ride it to work and back every day too. (there's a cut through the woods option on the way). I have to hurry up at hit the mail order!

Oops I forgot the picture! I'll put a couple better ones on this thread. Looks like I have a few months to get this done before it really is warm out. I feel as though I lucked out with a nice one to start with.

I got the title switched into my name and plates, the DMV looked at the 1982 Wisconsin title pretty close - held it up to the light etc.. finally said ok. They seem to come with or without title here in Iowa - and I wanted title. So I put the plates on and registration in my wallet - I am ready to ride except....Snow - too much snow and repairs.

Fuel dumped out through the petcock - seems packing gave way. It had sat for 18 years before I picked it up. SO about 5 am the garage in the basement fumed me out of bed, and I pushed it outside until "morning". I ordered a carb kit that day should be here any time. SO I am getting ready to do a carb rebuild.

I also ordered, handlebars, High/Low switch. tail light, bulb, gasket, screws and headlight, grab handle. Should keep me busy for a little while. I hope the snow gets plowed up a little so I can test drive the carb.

Any tips on carb rebuild?

I installed the handlebars, tail light, moved over the horn switch - spliced in the middle. And put on the new High/Low switch. Seems now that the throttle was tack welded in place, (not the only thing welded on the old bars). SO... I might as well order new throttle assembly - start fresh with the controls on the new bars. Which probably also means brake levers and headlight bucket as mine is cracked.

changed handlebar, headlight bucket, hi-low switch, throttle, handgrips, brake levers, added handle, bent seat pan back, cleaned and polished chrome some, and some other odds and ends. Getting ready for my wiring harness swap and my carb rebuild, and finally new battery. It hasn't ran since before swapping bars out, but it never started easy anyhow. I figure change the harness as there are a bunch of broken connections in the headlight. I hope to hear it run again next week. Order monday, gets here friday.

been going CHP seems to be ok stuff mostly HONDA.

Carb rebuild tips: Clean, clean clean. Use some carburetor cleaner to de-gunk, and since it has been sitting so long I would order a rebuild kit with needles to replace the main jet. Make sure when you put it back together that the o-ring between the float bowl and carb body doesn't get pinched or out of place or you'll be taking it apart to stop the leak. Ask me how I know about that...:4:

I have the carb rebuild kit from CHP - I have been waiting for the wiring harness I ordered to take the fuel lines off my carb. Our garage is below the bedroom - and seems to share some air. (new house to me) So I wanted to make all my stink at once. I am just going to try and count the turns on the screws to the seat and see if I can replicate that on the assembly. I had a leak - the new fuel must have ate its way out of the fuel petcock - I wiggled it around and it stopped. (not before the stink got out) It happend at 5:00AM and my wife was not real pleased. Good Morning!

Mike when you get the new harness, pull the tank out of it and install new fuel lines on it too. I'm sure the rubber has degraded inside the old lines. When you order new parts, the Dr can have your parts at your door in about a day. Just something to keep in mind if you need something NOW. :4:
I got your envelope in the mail yesterday and the package is going out this afternoon. :41:

Large yellow envelope received! Very nice, I have been doing some wood cutting in the garage and the sawdust got everywhere - not that it wasn't a good excuse to clean it all up again, but it's going to be a nice option to not have to. My wife and station wagon thank you and so do I.

The bag is nice - may take my maiden voyage today - I have only ridden it once, and I am about to get the CHP carb fedex today. And the roads are pretty clear. Lots of sand and stuff but it makes it more "offroady" thanks again bjatwood.

Wow!! Very nice looks just like mine which I've owned since new.
All original, mine doesn't have the handles under the seat, but I do have the passager foot
rest. Mine hasn't been started in probably 30 plus years. Hopefully start restoring mine this summer.
Even thou mine looks like crap right now I'll post some photos tonight... where do you find the engine #?

Clint,
The engine # is on the shifter side of the engine case just under and behind the shift shaft.
It probably won't match the VIN number on the frame exactly, but if it's original to the bike the number will be within ~150 numbers from the Frame VIN for a KO. Later bikes had farther apart VIN/ENGINE numbers than early bikes.
Looking forward to seeing your pics.

I've really been liking it, I did have a mishap the other day, I had my fuel lines switched and ran myself out of gas in the rain. But other than that I have had pretty smooth sailing. I have been getting better at down shifting - but hitting 1st has been tricky. Ever since I have had my mishap I have had to keep a certain bag in the car, in case emergency strikes. My wife thanks you.

Next I will order a seat, a rack, and maybe chain guard. Mine didn't come with the handle I put it on there. I have been using it as an in town commuter. I guess I also have trouble filling the gas without over filling. Practice I guess.

I wish I could ride one with "full power" for a K0 - so I knew how far off I am - I might do a compression test to see where I am at.

Post them pics up - I want to try and find a blue one "for my wife"
