1974 CT70 project help

Ok new member here.
I just picked this up from a buddy along with a big box of parts. He has an extra engine somewhere, but we couldn't find it in the "shop" today. :D

It is in good shape overall. The motor turns free, but won't start. Lots of reasons it shouldn't. :D

I did find one thing that I hope you guys can help with.
The exhaust manifold is missing and I notice there is a "notch" in the cylinder where it bolts up. First I thought it was a break, but looking at it I now think it could actually be machined that way. There is no rough edges like a normal break in the cast cylinder.

I have attached a picture of the bike and the notch in question.
Looking forward to restoring this with my kids (8 and 10) so we can all enjoy riding in for many years.

That looks fine to me - I thought the same thing first time I seen mine - Just make sure u buy a crush gasket that goes on inside of engine before putting on exhaust - I got mine for 3 bucks from a local motorsports shop - Took a few days to get in

Great. That is good news.
I thought I was going to have to hunt down a new head for the thing. They seem scarece. :D

I am hoping to find a full exhaust in the other box when it is found. :D

It has the same type of seat as my 72K1 which is a three speed. I hope to also find a 4 speed CT some day. Judging by the fact that it has the seperate headlight and speedo, looks like it is a 72-73 HK1 with the 4 speed clutch motor. It also appears that someone put forks on it from either an earlier bike ie: 71 or from a 74 or later. My CT is a 1972 K1, one of the only years that came with painted fork covers instead of rubber boots on the tubes. Yours is missing the tail light, on the 72 thats another give away. Its huge on that year. I also own a 1974 Honda CB 750 and the 72 mini trail used the same large tail light. On my CT I changed to a 71 wiring harness, main switch and tail light. The 71 tail light is smaller and I think it looks cooler than having that big clunker on the back of such a small bike. good luck

Yes his forks R from a 74 model, I can tell by the chrome headlight ears and the rubber boots in the middle. Probably original to the bike, engine isn't. But the 4 speed is the way to go tho, Congrats you have found a gem! :D
