1976 CT 70 transmission clicks in 3rd

Hi all,

Long time lurker, first time poster.

I'm restoring a 1976 CT 70. When I bought it, it had been badly neglected but still ran.

I changed the timing chain & clutch (and clutch springs). The bike now runs nice and smooth, clutch operates well, but it makes a loud clicking noise in third gear. Last time I dropped the oil I did have some shavings in it. All parts are OEM Honda.

Is the clicking in 3rd from something I might have done? I sure don't remember hearing it before, but to be honest the timing chain was so loud that I might have heard it and just put it off as that. And the exhaust was leaking badly. What could it be? Thanks a lot for your help!

Bad news, you are going to have to split the cases and look at the shift forks for damage/wear and transmission up close and personal. The clicking was caused by the schmuck who beat the piss out of it ''speed shift'' before you bought it.

Thanks for the replies all - I don't feel any jerking or anything, just hear it. I was hoping it could somehow be related to me changing the clutch or timing chain. I'm a decent mechanic, but you never know. But I don't see how it would only be in third gear with either of those repairs anyway. I guess if it has to come apart it'll likely have to sit until fall. Thank you.

Both missing 3rd gear teeth AND worn/''bent'' shift fork issues can be isolated to 3rd gear only issues. See you in the fall.

Thanks for the replies fellas. I'll dig in to it and share what the results are, but I suspect you're all correct.
