Howdy folks, new here and new to wrench turning in general, I've got an inherited 1980 CT70 and the keys disappeared in one of the 3 moves in the last few years. I'm reasonably sure the key code is engraved in the metal of the ignition switch, but how do you get the darn thing out of the dash

thanks in advance!

Very frustrating! I’ve removed a couple. Found this pic in an old thread of a removed one. The plastic tabs need to be depressed to remove it. It comes out through the top. You almost need three hands. Come in through the back side with some small screwdrivers or pics or small metal bars and start trying to depress the tabs and working it out. Not easy. But you are correct, that is where the key code is on the side of the cylinder it’s small and may be hard to see or dirty but it’s there.

My 82 was the exact style, I wanted a spare and used the code to buy one on ebay and it didn't work. :cautious:

I had an epiphany while showering. I took a zip tie and got it tight around the switch housing, slid it up to the clips, and that did wonders for cutting out some of the "3rd hand needed" work.

and boy were you right, sprouting a 3rd hand would have been almost as easy lol. got the little bugger though, now hopefully the guy I'm talking to has one.

lol sure did. Got the gas tank pulled so I can clean the rust out and replace the fuel lines, gotta clean the carb and petcock, get new tires, slap a new battery in and it SHOULD just go. Really hoping I can just get a key for it

Just an FYI, the ign switch on my '82 went bad many years ago, and I bought a cheap Chinese switch on ebay which fit with very little modification. I think I had to file a small notch in the plastic hole, but it's been trouble free ever since.

Nice Tweeking with the zip tie! I’ll remember that if I ever have to remove another. Glad you were able to get it out. I have an 80 and an 83. I was fortunate that both the switches were good. I got keys cut by that code on the cylinder. I used cyclekeysonline.com to get them cut. No problems. Happy wrenching 🛠 🔩.

Ignition was good a few years ago when it was fiddled with last so it should be good yet.

If my classic keys guy ends up falling through I'll definitely go through cyclekeys. Looks super easy to order from
