A new Grom in the garage

I actually picked this up about a month and a half ago at the time I learned there was quite a few differences in color schemes one stood out the SP version basically it’s the only version that has gold wheels and forks the rest are black wheels and silver forks another difference is in the body panels the SP has a matte black and the others use a gloss black. the only thing I didn’t like was it looked a little too young for me so I bought the white SP anyway but I added the blue panels which were only on the ABS version and that was something I didn’t want so here is my blue SP. The longer stroke and the five speed make a big difference the instrument cluster is also a nice upgrade from previous years along with a clock, fuel gauge and tach it also has a gear indicator it’s a lot of fun to ride.

I'm not crazy about Groms, but there's a new Monkey in my future. Tell me more about the 5 speed. Are the ratios closer, is 5th more of an overdrive? Also, have you ridden a 4 speed Grom? Usually a longer stroke and small bore moves the torque peak lower in the rev range. I was wondering if you could compare the two if you experienced them both. Best of luck with it, I also think the blue is more mature looking, if that's even possible.

The ratios are different. The Grom gear ratios are. 2.864, 1.777, 1.315, 1.034, and 0.843 5th gear. I also have a 2020 monkey that’s a 4speed the gear ratios are 2.500, 1.550, 1.150, and 0.923 4th gear. As you can see the five speeds fifth gear is more overdrive and the five speed splits the ratio below and above the four speeds third gear so it’s a lot more road friendly it’s possible to pull fourth gear to the rev limiter and fifth gear has good pull to about 7K I’ve only been able to get my Grom to do 64 but I’m over 200 pounds. The monkey top speed for me is 60 or so depending on my sprocket choice. The Grom is completely stock I owned a new Grom in 2015 the second year they were out. The 2022 is much more to my liking. If you look at the general section of groms here you can see what my impressions of the 2015 were. Not even close to how satisfied I am with the 2022

That's great info, thanks. From what I gather, the overall ratio on the 4 speed from bottom to top is 2.71, while the overall ratio on the 5 speed is 3.39, meaning it's a wider ratio gearbox, rather than a close ratio, and 5th is truly an effective overdrive. In fact, on the 5 speed, the overall ratio between 1st and 4th is 2.78, very close to the 4 speed's overall. Of course you can change sprockets either way, but I'm looking forward to getting my new Monkey. I Just keep shopping til I find the deal I want, they're still kinda scarce here in So Cal and dealers' ADM is still too greedy.
