Barn Find.... (My own!)

Hello All,
I just joined the site tonight after re-discovering my CT70 after a 10 year break. Long story short I was out riding my CRF450X at New Years when a pit bike race broke out in the staging area. I had seen these before but was not aware of how far the little thumpers had come.

That got me thinking about my mini's. I started picking up odds and ends starting in the late eighties. I was playing with z50KO's and CT70KO's. My camp bike is an original but well used "H" and I was restoring a 3 speed KO.

After finding this site I decided to finish my first ever resto effort. I bought a HVLP gun and my 70 was my first attempt at painting. I used PPG from Lyle at hondaminitrail and am pleased for my first effort (although not perfect).

Sorry to ramble but I STOKED! I just pulled her from the shed and blew her off with compressed air. I forgot how much work went into this prior to mothball!

I'm currently trying to figure out where I left off. I know I have little issues here and there to resolve. I will attempt to attach a picture in hopes you can appreciate my attempt at painting!

Thanks for listening and great job folks on a great resource!

Greg

Thanks

Thanks for the encouragement. Just solved one of the issues I remembered from the past. My re-popped bars were just a tad too thick on the chrome. To get the throttle correct I had to remove a smig from the end of the right bar where the metal throttle slide tapers at the end.

I also have a good problem in a way. I found my box of parts and there are some I don't recall where they go. I know I ordered them for a reason.

Perhaps I'll find a way to look up part numbers and up pops the answer!

I'm hoping when I go to crank her over, I just removed the stator plate and the timing is ballpark. I"m not sure I recall the details in there but will check it out soon!

Check out the plate on my beater H. Couldn't believe it was available...

UPS came but....

I received a box of parts but think I need to hold up a bit. After getting the valves adjusted and a static timing check I noticed the plug wire had a little garage engineering/undesired mod in that the wire is broken and someone zip tied a piece of rubber around it.

As I see it, now is the time to change the coil before I complete the tank and under the seat stuff. Would it be easier to just drop the motor?

I also purchased a new headlight bucket and chain guard and they don't match each other much less the bike. I am completely hosed with those two items plus the shock caps! Long story short, someone (ex) threw something on my drying rack ruining them.

Back to the garage to split some rims, fun from what I read here.

You have to drop the engine to remove the coil unless you have tiny itsy bitsy hands and fingers. Trust me, drop the engine and save yourself alot of headaches.

And, as for the rims, when I split my last set the tires were rusted on solid. Don't waste your time fighting with it if yours is in the same shape. Use a knife; a drywall knife has a nice stiff, short safe blade, and cut the tire down to the beads. Use a flat screwdriver to pull one bead up at a time and cut them with a set of side cutters. There'll be about ten beads but if you just go after them in the first place you'll save yourself a lot of headaches and busted fingers. I used a coat of Tremclad rust paint on theinside of the rims after I sandblasted all the rust off them. Don't know if this'll help in another five years when I'm changing the rear tire or not but it certainly can't hurt!

Good Luck and post up some pics!

Stuck again, thanks babbitonline.com

Well, I did drop the motor and can easily get to the coil (thanks for the tip). I also split the rims and replaced wheel and steering bearings so a little progress to report.

After my last order I thought I would try Babbitsonline. Not a good experience for me. Place a $230 dollar order on the 14th and they promptly charged my card and provided a delivery date. Day before I am expecting my stuff (a week later) I get an email saying a box is on the way and will be delivered....in another WEEK!

I see they credit me $85 bucks which is for a few things that were not available, no problem.

After the additional wait for my $230 order I get a tiny little box with one $4 nut. The shipping would not have warranted the purchase!

I just waited two weeks, paid a $150 for a single nut and can't go forward due to the missing coil.

This is starting to sound like a gov't project or something!

THanks again Babbit's!

coil on tjhe way

Well, after three calls I learned the coil I ordered on the 14th will be here on the 30th even though I am three days delivery from the vendor.

Since I am waiting on the coil I am looking for little stuff to do like the counter sprocket. I have questions how this works that the parts diagram does not address (clearly enough for me).

I have the sprocket and the plate with two holes thru which allen heads pass. This stops the sprocket from sliding into the case but not sliding off. Shouldn't there be a circlip on the counter shaft? Silly questions I know but it has been too long since I took her apart.

Your wisdom is appreciated because this is not making sense.

Hi.Im not sure if even the manual explains this, but i think i can help.put the sprocket on,then slip the plate on it will go on then turn it to line up with the threaded holes.thats how it locks in a nut shell. put your bolts in and your good.

Hummmm

Thanks CT, I will give that a shot. Adding to my confusion is the fact I purchashed what was supposed to be an OEM locking plate for the sprocket. It is slighty different than the one I pulled of the bike with the keys being in different places relative to the holes for the bolts.

If I am understanding correctly I will push the sprocket on, slide the locking plate up to the sprocket, then rotate?

One of them slides on and past the notch in the counter shaft sprocket! I can bolt the sprocket to the plate and push it on and off the counter shaft.

Yes the ''countershaft'' itself i believe has a groove in it.for the counter sprocket plate to spin.once your actually fussing with it you will see it slides on than spin it until your lined up with the holes in the sprocket and the bolts go in then it wont pull off.different sprocket companys use different types of retainers.i used a clip once that came with a small counter sprocket that wasnt drilled for the plate style.the clip was in the package.i prefer the plate..:)

More good news from Babbitts

Thanks CT, I'm golden now and I have both types...

So after watching the UPS guy drive by again I thought I would check in with my friends at Babbitts to see WHERE MY COIL IS. Mind you I have seen nothing at all from them other than tracking number 5 days after I ordered. I called them again because I never received a tracking number (for everything except the single bolt they sent). They gave me the old "sorry, we'll ship that out first thing tomorrow.

Now they don't even have it, said they lost it and want to start all over. I asked them to rush order and ship next day to me so I can slap that darn coil in there.

The kicker is the motor is complete on the bench and ready to drop in. URRRRGGGGHHHHH

Will do thanks. I only tried them because I found them in another post here or planetminis.

They said they would erase my charges, then re-process the order yet I see zero emails or activity on my card.

I think I may just start over elsewhere If I don't have the coil in my hands by Monday (as promised the 3rd time).

Sorry to rant, not my MO, just wanted an FYI for others. I'm guessing others have had better experiences.

I can't speak for Northeast Vintage Cycle, but definitely try Beatrice Cycle (DrATV) next time.

I've placed three orders with them so far, for various repair parts. (fasteners, rubber parts, battery, chain & sprockets, air filter, throttle parts, etc. ) and all three times, everything was in stock, competitvely priced, and shipped the next day. They've been great.

Sorry, I had intended to post completed bike pics by now but I STILL have not received my order from Babbittsonline.com. Add to the list with Brad from Old Honda. Today I called to cancel the order and they said they could not do that either. Like everything else with them, that would have to wait until tomorrow.

My Experiences With Babbitt

They've been great. I ordered a coil a few weeks ago, and it arrived in 4 days - about a week earlier than expected.

I've placed about 8 orders with Babbitt, and all have gone smoothly.

Not sure what happened with your order, but from my personal perspective they appear to be a well run, professional business.

DrATV and TB have also been awesome!
