Chain adjuster not flush with swingarm

Hey guys,

I have a 1970 CT70H K0 and replacing the rear chain adjuster bolts as the old ones were rusted out with genuine OEM Honda part # 9501-410-010).

I'm thinking there is an issue on the left side since the washer section / hole of the adjuster bolt does not sit flush with the swingarm once it's in the slot. I can push the axle through and tighten the nut down but that causes bending of the chain adjuster and results in an awkward tweak - forcing the bolt threads at an angle with pressure from where it's held in the slot which will ultimately strip those threads over time (appears this is what happened to the previous one that was rusted resulting in not being able to make adjustments). It's as if the inlet that holds the bolt doesn't go in far enough. I don't have the issue with the right side.

Looking at the schematics everything is correct and I'm not missing any washers / collars. https://www.cmsnl.com/honda-ct70h-trail-70h-1970-ct70hk0-usa_model616/partslist/F++09.html

Everything seems straight but could my swingarm possibly be bent in a way that's not obvious? The gap just seems pretty big and feels wrong to have to bend the adjuster that much with torquing the axle nut.

See attached photos of both sides.

Any input would be appreciated.

How does it look when it is all the way forward or in the middle and held touching? That is where it will be living. No one has the chain adjuster/adjusted that far back.

It is better..all the way forward still a gap I assume it's not a big deal and meant to bend? I was planning on going halfway, which is initially where I noticed the issue when tightening down.

Attached another photo all the way forward.

Apologies, my CT was sitting for 20 years and started growing hair on the chain.

It's fine, you will only turn the 10mm adjuster nut when the axle nut/bolt is loose. Then tighten the axle to 35ft lbs and lightly snug the 10mm nuts. It's won't strip or bend when it is adjusted the correct way. It seems the former owner did not know the proper way.

Ok great. My goal is to bring the bike back to it's original state as much as possible and correct any previous hacks that have been made. Appreciate the response and knowing the correct torque is also helpful!

It looks to me that the chain side fork prongs are bent in a little towards the front. I think someone tried to adjust the chain without loosening the axle nut.

I agree with CJ, someone prolly didn't loosen the axle bolt when adjusting. Left side has obvious horseshoe bend at the back versus 90 degree bend on right side. I'd prolly tighten the axle bolt without adjustor on and do a little hammer love tapping on that bracket.
