CT 70 opportunity

This maybe should go in the "craigslist" forum, but I figured I'd get more traffic here.

I have a chance to buy a ct 70 locally. It's $350 bucks,and has a clear title.

It's in rough shape, and I'm kinda doubting that it runs. The craigslist ad says that it ran but started hard. It says he took it apart to re-build it, but then decided not to, so he put it back together so he wouldn't lose any parts. (That part scares me, but could be ok).

It's in rough shape, but I've got time to work on it, and it's not very often that you find one with a clear title, so I'm still temped. It's a '73, with a three speed. What do you guys think?

I would say thats a '72, my opinion the only thing going for it is the title, try and wait and get it cheaper. hows the seat pan? the bike looks pretty rusty, for $500 you could probably find an earlier one that runs and has less rust, title isn't worth that much to me. around here thats a $200 bike. You would have trouble getting $200 for it in parts. Thats my 2 cents

I'm valuing the title because I want to put it on the street. I'm not thinking this is a steal or anything like that. I know I can do better with more money, but the idea is less money up front, frees up more money for fixing.

I've been through this several times with people, and here in Wisconsin, they're getting real tough on that. The capital in this state is not really accepting duplicate titles or newly made titles from these "title" companies. You have to go on about a 2 year waiting list to see if it comes up stolen, and even then the cost is supposedly much higher than 100 bucks.

If your okay with $350 do it...It will save you the title trouble, but I would start at $200 also and work up. Don's right about it being a 72 model.

Hmm... now that's got me wondering too. In the ad he says he's had the bike for years, and he's calling it a 73. How could he have that wrong if he's had it for years?

Thanks for the input. When I go look at it, I'll double check that title and the vin on the bike.

The title could say 73...There are a lot of CT's titled for the next years model. If it was mfg or sold late thats why. It is no big deal. You can tell the year by the colors among other things. I have a bike just like that one. The only thing that MIGHT be an issue is if WI requires signals on 73 and newer bikes like some states. If that happens, either add signals or prove to the DMV that it is a 72 and exempt.

JMHO but I think it's a $200 bike. To get a title in Indiana, It takes a police record check (online in realtime in the cruiser) with a State Trooper and a signed affidavit of ownership. All this along with a picture and 15.00 cash money gets an Indiana title. I was sweating the prior history of my high dollar K3 resto because the penalty of a questionable search history of the VIN is a confiscated and impounded bike until the previous owners release (or not) is obtained.

Bargain the gentleman down. It's still only a $200 bike! It will take a lot of rebuild parts as well as paint, time, and lots of labor.
That being said, when it's finished, you'll have a nice K1 for under a K. No pun intended.

Good Luck!

Thanks, didn't know that.

The more I think about this, the more I agree with you and others, that this is a $200 dollar bike. There's just too much work needed to get this back to being decent again.
I'll know more when I go look at it. I'm checking it out this saturday.

My HK1 has a build date of 10/71 and the title says it's a '73. Mine's already titled here in Oregon. The laws for Oregon state: Turn Signals: Required by law (motorcycles manufactured before 1973 are not required to be equipped with turn signals.) So here it's date of manufacture not year of title.

one of my buddies just sold a running KO 4 speed bike for $400 to put things in perspective, $350 is way too high imo, i would pay $150

The chrome on the bike looks like it's shot . Deep pitting you probably will have to replace alot of items . Make sure to examine the frame closely - It appears like it's spent alot of time in the elements , check for rust from the inside /out .
I bought an HKO in a similar condition & when bead blasting the frame below the seat needed alot of body work (no fun). For a rider , maybe good . If your looking to restore to really nice , have a fat wallet . Good Luck .

Well, I went and saw it today. He said he'd probably take $250. I didn't grab it yet, but I might.

It does need a lot of stuff replaced, but I've been looking around and there's tons' of stuff available.

I'm undecided. I kinda don't care how long it takes to fix it up, I'm just looking forward to the project. I want to make this a street rider, so I'm kinda attracted to it because of the title.
