Gold CT70 of mine that has no vin number on frame as far as I can tell, at least not in the normal place. Engine number is 190508......frame tag is missing. Were silver tags riveted as there are no rivet holes? Appears to be original paint.

Thanks

Look down on the lower left side of the frame by the chainguard...The number is stamped there.

That is too high of a number to be a silver tag era motor..Find out whats on the frame and then you will know what it is.

The vin # should be between the two holes where the air filter box and chain guard bolt in place. I wiped the area with 110 octane(really cleaned it up) and there is no number there....doesn't appear to be one there like it is on my other CT70s.

Could it be a clone frame?

I have had it for awhile, when did clone frames first appear? It had a frame tag at one time since it has rivet holes where the tag was attached. Nothing leads me to believe it is not original.

I'm not sure of the year that the patent expired on the Honda CT70's and clones hit the market...I know that info is on the net as I have read it before...Just can't remember.

I have never seen or heard of a CT70 that did not have the VIN's stamped in the frame. They came with the stem tag VIN and the VIN stamping in the frame.

If you are sure you are not overlooking the numbers or that they have not been ground away and filled, which to me would point to stolen frame...then clone frame is my only guess.

Over the counter frames from Honda I don't think had VIN#'s, I know my Z50 frame didn't, may be a replacement frame
Don

Don,
You are correct. Frames of some years can still be purchased today, but, with no serial/vin numbers stamped. Last time I checked a CT70 frame was around $390 US. I ordered one from my buddy at the Honda dealership and then changed my mind.

I think that must be the case as it looks to be original Honda. It must have been put in service many years ago. Would Honda have ever sold replacement frames already finished back in the early seventies?

Yes ! Honda replaced my frame under warranty back in the day due to cracking/bending.(these frames just weren't made for Evil Knievel) The new frame came without a Vin number as the Dealers were not allowed to transfer Vin Tags per DOT.
I have the paperwork showing it being changed under warranty. The Dealer was not happy that Honda actually did this due to neglect but for me it worked out.

I had completely forgotton about the VIN-less replacement frames....That makes sense if you see no sign of bodywork with yours that is what happenend...Maybe the first owner was a jumper too and had it replaced.

I did see where Honda's CT/ST patent expired in 1998.

BikeBandit.com still lists them as available.

Some years ago, circa 2001, there was a guy who paid through the nose to build an all-NOS HK1. Must've made a lot of ebay sellers very happy in the process. I never saw him lose an auction on an NOS HK1 part; it was entertaining to watch. One of the items he won was an NOS service replacement frame. Once the bike was complete, color match was an issue between the various painted parts. Worse yet, he decided that the reality of a totally stock bike fell short of his dream. You guessed it, without a VIN & title he lost his ass when he sold it. As I recall, it didn't even crack the $2000 mark, at a time when a first-rate restoration would reasonably have been expected to fetch $3500 - $4000.

In terms of bikes delivered without VINs, I've seen two. Both were early production ST70s. The sidebadges were different between them and the only examples of those specific designs I've yet seen. No idea whether these came off the line VIN-less or if the frames were service replacements. Considering some of the anomalies we've seen, the former wouldn't be too surprising. I've just never run across this with a CT70. Different countries, different laws. The US of A has been pretty strict about requiring VINs. On the other side of the world, 40 years ago, who knows?
