Does changing the bore on an original 1971 Honda CT70H reduce it's value

Hello Everyone,

I bought a 1971 Honda CT70H in 2019 and had it repainted and it came out beautiful. I had the same bike when I was 12 years old back in 1977 and weighted only 80 pounds. I'm now 58 years old and weight 215 pounds and I obviously have to use lower gears for climbing hills. CHP said I might want to consider purchasing an 88CC Bore Kit, CHP Aluminum Cylinder 'A' Style Motor (6-Volt) to get more power out of my bike. I have a few questions please 1) Will this hurt the value of my bike? and 2) Will this impact any other functionality on the bike? Example - The electrical system, etc. ? and 3) Is this the best bore kit to use on a 1971 CT70H 4 speed manual transmission bike?

Any input would be greatly appreciated

Thank you!

For the same price as a good bore kit you can have the jug bored and a new oversized piston ordered. That way I don't think hurts the value

If your looking for just a little more speed you could just install a hotter/bigger camshaft..I don’t think that would hurt the value at all but with some cams you would need stiffer/stronger valve springs to go along with the cam..

I bought the CHP 88 kit that included cylinder, Piston, head and cam, gaskets and jets and carb. I also went with cdi conversion on a ct70h and I couldn't be more pleased. It's never ran better and still looks completely stock. I don't plan to sell it so if it declined in value to someone else I don't care. It went up in value to me because it more enjoyable to ride.

Thank you for the information. I don't plan on ever selling my bike either. If you don't mind me asking, how much do you weigh? I weigh 215 lbs and I'm just wondering how well that 88 kit from CHP will pull a 215 lbs person. Thanks again!

I am 180lbs. The difference in torque is very noticeable. Top speed is about the same maybe a little better. I can top out the speedo.

I'll come from an angle a bit different. I was lucky enough to find an xr70 motor for $100 and built it to add 12v and cdi too.
The only permanent mod was drilling a neutral switch hole in that case for my K3. All the unmolested original parts are safely stored.
Don't remember the gearing exactly but it takes my 180 lbs. to 50 mph quickly. Rear sprocket is about as small as I can go on the hub. It's a complete 88 race kit.
I wanted to be able to to convert it all back by just reinstalling all the original parts. Value concern completely solved.
My mistake was trying to tune it with the original muffler.
It's a bigger can of worms than you're talking for sure.
