Ended up with a ATC70 4 speed manual motor. . will it work?

Somehow I ended up with a ATC 70 motor in my hunt for motors. I am building a few Hotrod 1980 CT's and want one to be a 4 speed manual so this fits the bill. How hard is it to make it a kickstart and not pull? What else is needed to use this in my CT??

Also this motor has a shaft coming out where the rubber plug is to the right of the neutral switch, sounds like it does something in the tranny. Did it come with a high and low?

Correction, it is a 4 Speed Auto.

That was for some sort of gear indicator or something. As far as converting to kick start, you will need to split the cases and install a kicker shaft. The hole should already exist in the main case. You will need a kick start sidecover. Let me know if you need either of these pieces. I have some kicking around. You could also convert to manual clutch while you're at it if you wanted to.

The motor can go right in a CT...but it isn't the best solution. I'd recommend you find a set of CT70 cases (or z50 cases) and a 3spd kickstart shaft/gear combination...Everything will swap right in those cases and you will then have a nice 4 speed honda CT70 motor for dirt cheap. The only thing that may need changing is the flywheel, but that's cheap enough.

I've got a set of '84 ATC70 cases and a set of old (early '70s) CT cases sitting on the work bench right now, so I went out and did some checking, and I'm pretty sure that they are identical. My ATC cases are already machined for the left end of the kickstarter shaft and have the boss on the right case half that the return spring hooks on. If I was a betting man I'd say that it's easier for Honda to use the same cases for everything. They do have different numbers on the microfiche, but I don't see any difference, except that the ATC has the external cam chain adjuster screw and the CT doesn't. Just make sure you use the ATC cam chain adjuster parts and you should be good.

I've got assume that fatcaaat knows which kickstarter you need. Sorry, but I don't have the time to verify which one it takes right this minute.

Rysem steered you right on the shift drum stem. You can unscrew it and pop the seal out and replace it with a plug. (I think that 90801-035-000 is the number for XR/CRF 50/70s, which should work for you. Let us know how it turns out.

I just got the kickstart case off e-bay. I am short motors so I really want all of them to be used and running. I will get a kickstart shaft, split the cases and install the shaft. How hard is it to go with the manual clutch? I have 72H cases laying around with only gears in it. I am still very new to these bikes. learning everyday. Paid to have a kickshaft install this week but watched. I think I can do it now. What was that shift drum stem for anyway? I saw the external cam adjuster screw. this should be fun. The case was 10.00, the shaft is 20.00 and I have a motor. . right

The H-model CTs took a different kickstarter gear than the 3-speeds, but since the ATC 4-speed has the same first gear ratio (36:11) as the 3-speed CTs (except for the early K0s which had a 37:11 first gear, but that's another story) fatcaaat's recommendation of the 3-speed kickstarter mechanism sounds like it's gotta be right. Just make sure you get all the kickstarter clips and spacers in the right places (and don't misplace any from the tranny when it's out) and you should be set. You'll like it. 4-speeds rock! :thumb:

Thanks, I have several H models now, just looking to get these 80 models going so I can use them to trail ride. The four speed auto just fell in my hands, we shall see what turns out
