First Honda CT70 project

I had a 1977 when I was a kid. It was sold while I was in college and I have missed it ever since. I decided to put one together from a 1973 frame and a Puppy clone. I have had it painted Candy Riviera Blue and have been swapping parts off of the clone. The current plan is to use the clone engine until I get a TRX70 engine properly built with a kickstart and added displacement. Here is some pictures of my progress. frame_parts.jpgdonors.jpgchina_engine.jpgdono22.jpgpainted1.jpgassem1.jpgassem2.jpghonda_engine.jpg

I plan on licensing this when I get it up and running. I am saving the engine project for winter.

I think the paint job is the best part. I am leaning toward not putting any decals on it. I have another bike also lined up and I will see if he will paint it too. I am thinking candy apple red for the next one.

These headlight ears are not "plug and play" I made some rubber mounts to adapt the fork diameter to the headlight ear diameter out of some heater hose. The wiring harness is a little short in the current setup with the headlight ears. I am going to move them down a bit and see if that helps. If it does not I will have to cut them down a bit and drill new mounting holes.

I am working on getting the wiring for the headlights. I managed to get the brake pedal, tail light, and chain guard on today. I am not sure what I will do about stickers just yet. I may just do the ct70 shield. I really like the paint job and am reluctant to cover too much of it up.

I took it for a ride today. It is not finished but I wanted to see what other bugs I would have to fix. It has a few rattles and the carburetor is leaking. There is a big rattle between the shock and muffler. I will see if I can shim in some extra clearance. As for the carb I am not sure if I want to change it out or see if I can adjust the float in it. The engine also seems to be a bit underpowered or geared low. I could only get 35 mph out of it. I know I will be happier when I get the Honda engine built and installed.

Looks good Andy,

Where did you get your seat? did you replace the seat cover or the complete seat? I need to either get a new seat or weld my pan and replace the foam and cover.

I am procrastinating about hooking up the lighting wires. I did get the luggage rack installed though. It is a tight fit to get that thing on. I had to do a little grinding on the muffler bracket to shock. On the plus side the shock no longer rattles against the muffler.

It was a good day to work on the project today. I have it pretty much where I want it for now. I am going to get it licensed for road use. I must say I am not really not too impressed with this Chinese engine. While it idles nicely, it vibrates rather harshly at the higher RPM's. It will give me incentive to get the Honda engine running and installed.

I am happy with the look of the bike though. Also I had to cut the key down so it would there would be no interference between it and the head light ears.
