okay to preface this inquiry, my handle is engine doctor, NOT upholstery doctor BUT i don't consider myself to be Clueless either.

1979 z50r: bought this bike when i was 14. Seat cover torn, BUT the foam was still intact enough to be re-used, SO i ordered a cover off ebay years later, maybe when i was 16 or 17. Wrapped it myself, no help from mom and dad and it looked (imo) Good. Here's 2 pics:

1978 Ct90: bought this as a package deal, cover torn, rotten because of UV rays and other misc weather. Bought a Foam AND cover from DR. ATV (who i used to like). wrapped it. not my first rodeo at this point. wrapped a bunch of jeeps seats by now, 10 years later, i'm 25 or 26... Looks like garbage. Call DR. ATV. they said 'send us pics' So i sent them the following pics. then said 'send us foam and cover'. I sent them the foam and the cover. foam and cover (same ones) come back. Apparently i'm an idiot, and having spend over $1000 with DR. ATV in the past, they were unwilling to help me, the cover was correct for my year bike (according to them) even though it didn't fit my pan, which was original <they also no longer sell this foam... coincidence?> This is what it looked like:

So, took THAT seat to an upholstery guy in salt lake. He was legit. showed him the whole deal, he says 'i can do it but it won't be cheap'... Does the seat. Makes his own cover AND foam. Looks great BUT doesn't say honda. $180. So now i paid dr. atv $100 for nothing, and an upholstery guy $180 to make it look good. Now a $280 motorcycle seat for a minibike i spent $500 for....

I don't have pics of this one, BUT the cover had a slight tear. Foam original and un-blemished. Got a new cover off ebay, installed easily. Looks good. no complaints (can you believe that??!?)

1974 st90:
Making this one NICE (or trying to) i bought a 'reproduction seat' from vietnam or thailand or one of those asian countries that isn't japan. Seat shows up, looks okay, but the pan is wrong. completely wrong. tried to adapt the foam and cover to the OE pan. Failure. Order a reproduction foam from 'joemama' off ebay... this one to be exact: Honda CT70 Seat Foam Cushion Trail Ct 70 ST90 St 90 | eBay

says in listing 'excellent quality; molded from factory honda parts' So i put it on my original pan. looks a little bulky, but MIGHT work... right??
So i order a cover from gumtwo in canada, also Ebay Cover shows up, looks good... So i start mounting it all together
No love. hit it with a hair dryer... can't stretch it enough... have someone stand on the pan while i try to stretch the cover over the now compressed foam.... still nothing

SO... finally a question: Is there ANY DECENT, RELIABLE producers of reproduction seat foam i can trust in the future? Should i hire a part time upholstery guy to make foam when i need it?

You guys have nice bikes, what do you do?

It's Thailand and Tammy For Me

I have ordered two ST90 complete seats from Thailand / EBay and have been happy with the look and durability of both. The pan is a little different and it does not fit as perfectly as OEM Honda but all in all, it is not bad.

And I have ordered two CT90 seat covers from EBay - one from "Tammy" something or another in Florida and another from an unknown. These also look good and are holding up well over the original foam and the original seat pans that were bead blasted and repainted.

got mine from ebay -joemamas 43,00 shipped --chp sells it to

See i got the same Joemama foam, but the front half of it is wayyy too thick. i can get about the rear 40% of the seat cover on the little tabs, but can't stretch the front. did you have to trim yours to make it fit?

Hello Enginedoctor. Did you end up finding a quality seat foam for your ST90. I too have ordered the cover from Gumtwo and am now looking for seat foam that will work with it.

Sergeants Upholstery in Jacksonville, Fl. did a custom seat for me, lowering the seat using a "Tempurpedic" type high density foam.
I am short.....4'10" and this really helped. $219.00 complete. Seat looks and feels GREAT!

Hey will, truth is, no, I haven't found an accurate foam. I like doing things myself, but ended up using the reproduction Honda cover and having some salty old upholstery guy redo the seat. Cost me another $75 from what I remember, and I supplies the foam that I think he took an electric turkey carver to, in order to shape it. From now on, I might just pony up and spend the paper with the upholstery shops on anything non-ct70. I just don't think the aftermarket is there yet on smaller production bikes, and besides, on bikes with seat so "large" in relation to the rest of the vessel, you want it to look a+ quality. Hope that helps. I love a cheap out but this one I haven't found a solution for.

Cut some seat foam for my S90 recently. Bought the foam on Ebay and the electric knife at Walmart. Can't say what it feels like since I'm way ahead of schedule with the seat vs. the rest of the restoration.
