How hot is too hot?

I have an engine I recently did a top end rebuild on, just put it into service.

It runs fine, very satisfied with it overall. However, it gets hot. The cases get hot and the side covers (esp. stator side) get hot enough that it's uncomfortable to be close to them. Not hot enough to fry an egg on, but close.

Is this normal? It seems too warm to me, and this is after regular rides, nothing too heavy or taxing.

I find it very odd that the stator side is getting that hot. What grade of oil are you running?

I'm wondering about that too... i am running MC oil, Valvoline 10/40. After reading over some old posts here on oil, i think that maybe the switch to a 20/50 would be wise. I will try that tonight, see if it helps.

my friend got a HUGE 2nd degree burn on my stator cover when he crashed my bike (not his fault, low speed crash) its gonna get hot, it IS air cooled after all. i run straight 30 synthetic oil.

OK... that helps. I think I was just extra cautious cause it was a new build, I did not remember them getting that hot but probably because I never worried about it before, just rode and rode.
