Hi there.
Newbie here. I picked up a 1972 K1 and a 1978 for $120 each. The 78 ran but the 72 did not. Can I put the 78 motor into the 72? The 78 is 12 volt and the 72 is 6 volt.
Im going to use the 72 frame because the 78 had all its goodies stolen(lights, headlamp, tail lamp, )and the wiring harness was cut short at all terminals.

You'll just have to swap over the electrical from the 12v and you should be fine.

If you're 12v lights are gone, you'll have to get new 12v bulbs.

If it were me, I'd fix both. 120 bucks invested in two of these?.? You got a great deal, your going to want a second one anyway.

The 78 motor is in the K1 and running very nicely. Had to use the older carb and play with it. I did switch the coil out but not sure which one as I had a few old ones given with the 72 bike. Anyway why would I need to switch over the electrical harness? Or was the coil enough. Do I need to install a 12 volt battery and get 12 v bulbs front and rear?

Sold the 78 frame and fork. Was going to keep it but thought it was a lost cause as it needed every part replaced. Will look for a better bike that needs less parts to make it whole.

'78 CT70's are 6 volt. Even the 82's were still 6 volt. Sometimes people put 12 volt bulbs in them and then can't figure out why things don't work. Then they sell them cheap for $120. Bulbs are cheap. 1129's for turn signals, 1154 for tail/stop bulbs. Of course, they could have put a chinese motor in it and changed it over to 12v.

If I'm not mistaken, the Honda 12 volts began in or around 1980. You would need to swap out the coil, the bulbs, the horn, and a couple more small items. This would be a Japanese 12 volt Honda system, not Chinese and you would absolutely love it. CDI also, no more points to mess with. Good luck.

Um I feel dumb now. Like I said a newbie. Maybe why its running good, it IS a 6v. Bigger battery led my astray. Oh well. Maybe painting it might make me feel less ashamed, but now i'm second quessing my painting plans. Thanks to all who replyed with the good news that I did infact have a 6 volt..
