My 1976 CT70

Hello to everyone here!

I just registered earlier this week, but failed to introduce myself. I am Fender everywhere i go online. I am involved in a little bit of everything, but one of my greatest passions are motorsports. Now, though i really love all of it, when it comes o mechanics i know more than i can do. So despite knowing what everything is and does on cars and motorcycles, i cannot repair them or better yet; find the source of the problems.

When i was 12, i inherited the family ct-70. It has been passed down through about 3 generations of my family, and so obviously i was psyched. However, it was given to me in a horrible condition. The seat was ripped and trashed and covered in duct tape, there was mud and an oily inch thick residue under on the engine harness and in every cavity of the engine, the lights no longer existed or function, the honk was inexistant, the brake pads were nearing their end and the front brakes were no where to be found. However, my father ensured me that no matter how bad it looked, this bike had been known throughout it's existence of being undestructable. I would believe him all up until recently.

Last year, my father lent it to my neighbor. He had asked my permission and though i should've said no, i was too busy to consider the damages that would occur. Really , why would i ? I must add that his father was a mechanic and so i figured his old man would help him restore it. I understood that as a positive. Like i mentioned before, i was pre-occupied with other things; mainly, i had just claimed my drivers license so that was real fun. Anyways let's get down to the repercussions.

When the bike was returned to me, the tape and the remaining leather that had been on there for years was ripped off leaving the foam. Worst than that, the metal seat under that clicks in and out to allow access to the gas was destroyed. I literally mean 2 or 3 pieces. The exhaust pipe was now severed and he had destroyed one of the screw mounts to hold it. His repair ? eletrical wire around the rest of the mount. It was easily noticed. He also actually stole my filter sponge. That thing was black and destroyed, but i guess he needed a reminder of why he will die someday ;). The bike now leaked more gas than ever as i assumed he never took care of the carburator like i ask him too, and i confirmed it when i opened her up to reveal a lot of crud and residue. He reset the float at the wrong level.

So now i am left with this old big pile of rusted noisy crap. I was and am seriously pissed.

I brought it to a mechanic yesterday and he should have it working this week, but now i wanna bring it back to it's former glory. To what it looked like when everything worked. What i need to know is where i can find some parts and what would you guys recommend for me to do in the order of more importants.

For instance, i would really like to have my lights on there again because i find its one of the most important things. Next, how would i got about installing the front brakes and the brake handle for the front cause all i have now is the foot break.

What are some of the repairs that you members have worked on that are also the least expensive that i could do ?

I appreciate all comments and advice given as i really do not know where to start.

For now here are the things that are covered if you need an idea as to what i need.

- Bike in working condition
- Exhaut pipe welded
- brakes still work but barely anyways
- newish bench bought

everything else needs to be done :)

and all of the above is assuming the mechanic does it :)

Thank you for the long read and i really hope someone can point me in the right direction

Seats, tires, brakes, chain/sprockets and exhausts are all more or less disposable items and readily avialable. There's nothing like a rotted exhaust to make any machine feel like a POC. Seat pans can sometimes be welded & reinforced, the foam & cover replaced. Done properly, you'll have a stronger seat pan than original. However, the seat pan needs to be all there and you can easily spend more on the repairs than the cost of a new seat.

These bikes don't have much in the way of wiring. I don't know how available repop wire harnesses are for the `76 model, but these should be mostly the same as the pre `73s with the addition of turn signals. Get yourself a shop manual. It'll come in handy for lots of things, but a wiring schematic is what you need for now. Repairing/replacing missing or damaged leads is strightforward enough along with the battery and any AWOL bulbs.

The big ticket items are the engine, paint/bodywork and chrome.

www.hondanuts.com www.dratv.com are two of the best suppliers for parts that you would be looking for. If you can replace the parts yourself you will save lots of money as opposed to having a mechanic do everything, unless he is a friend of yours and will do it cheaply or at no cost. Like Racer said,a shop manual is a must if you decide to go at it yourself.

Thanks for all the replies , this is great to hear. For now, however, tge mechanic has welded it. I think that afterwords i will get an aftermarket pipe for it because i would like to increase performance on the dime at this point. I can buy the 110 kit afterwards, but i wanna know what it feels like to have it running again :(.

As for the last question... I have no idea. However, i think he was using for spare parts. I often awe Honda 50 or 70 cc in his yard. Looked like an 80's mini cross body with a black 72 cc engine.

Anyways, if he hadn't move away last week, i would dropped him off a nice bill.

Places to find parts

Hey Fender,

Here are some online places in addition to the others. David Silver Spares in England he specializes in NOS/OEM Honda parts. Classic Motorcycle Supplys in the Netherlands cmsnl.com These are two that I use in addition to Beatrice Cycle in Nebraska their Dratv.com. North East Vintage Cycle in NY, and CHP in Tyler Texas. Just google em. If you want original paint--Classic Honda Paint.com. I just painted mine Kandy Ruby Red. One other resource is E-Bay for parts but buyer beware. good Luck

TBparts.com is another great resource.

I would also strongly encourage you to increase the displacement to an 88cc with a race cam if you plan on riding it on pavement.

I just picked up a ct70h a few months ago,try and call your local dealer as I found out they had the parts I needed at fair price and you won't have to have it shipped
