Hey all I am new to the forums and just picked up my first Trail 70. I don't know a ton about the bike and was hoping some of you could help me with a few questions. First I have identified the frame vin as ct70-21xxx... which I beleive means it is a 73'? Is this correct? The next question I have is the engine vin reads ct70e-30...... What does this mean? Is the engine correct to the frame? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

So it is for sure a different motor to the original body? If so what year would the motor be from? Still a 73' or a different year. I'm guessing this also affects the value of the bike correct?

Thanks bjatwood for the earlier insight. Can you offer any more regarding the questions I replied with or does anyone else have any ideas to some of the questions presented? Thanks!

Everything else being equal for the same 2 bikes, I would say yes an all original bike would be worth more than a bike with a non orginal engine. But it would also depend on what the buyer is looking for. Like they say, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

So how do I figure out what year the engine is from? Will this impact what parts I need to order should a problem arise or all the parts pretty much the same?

Look up about 4 post to Brians. Take the engine number off the side of the engine and compare it to the link Brian gave you. Yes they are pretty much the same.

I already did take a look at that chart and I didnt see anything that related to by bike's engine vin. I know mine starts with ct70e-30..... and nothing seems to relate to that. This seems strange and wanted to know what all you think. Thanks for the help!

Someone can correct me, but the K2's are a little bit different as far as frame numbers and engine numbers. For some reason they don't follow the standards that Honda documented for the engine and they run a 6 digit engine starting with a 3. Drop the first 2 digits from the frame (i.e. the 21) and the first digit from the engine (i.e. the 3) and see how close your numbers match. You probably have the original frame and engine. An expert will confirm.

1973 CT70K2 engine and frame VIN's are different. I've verified this with several K2 owners. The frame numbers are 7 digits and start with 21XXXXX. The engine numbers are only 6 digits and start with 3XXXXX. Compare the last three or four digits of the frame and engine to see if they are with in 300 to 500 digits of one another they are most likely matching from the factory.

There are two popular websites that incorrectly identifiy K2 frame/engine serial number informations. Don't be misled.
