Update:
Now that the rims are free i had a chance to clean them up and see if they were useable. All but one look really good. the worst one will need some Bondo to fill the rust divots.

Also started on the muffler , its in bad shape but its what i have at the moment so i had to fix a few things. Broken off bolt and a hole that had to be welded up

BTW anyone know what color the rims are and where to get it ?

the rims were originally white. i used some Duplicolor engine paint (white) to do mine. easy to apply paint and is durable. if you are going through all the trouble to refinish the wheels, why are you saving the old tires? they appear to be worn out. new ones are available along with tubes. i would recommend buying a couple of tubes as spares to have on hand in case of the unforseen puncture. seriously, replace those tires, you won't regret it.

Nice work. What did you do to the air filter looks good?

thanks guys ! Well believe it or not i used a buffing wheel and compound. Ive found that just about any metal
can be polished like chrome. A clear can be then sprayed to preserve the metal from tarnishing.
I plan on doing that to most of the non painted parts on the bike to give it some shine :4:
Give it a try! you can get a wheel and compound at even harbor fright for cheep (you'll need a bench grinder)

okay now to get specific... what kind of grinder/ wheel you using and what compound? the aluminum brake plates etc. look WICKED shiny. i've accomplished similar results (but i dont think as nice) with a braided buff and tripoli, then switching to a soft cotton buff and white rouge. you can see some of the stuff in my albums on my page... specifically the cr500 motor.

that air cleaner turned out Awesome! I would have never thought about polishing it. Great Job! I have had a HF buffer and some Dico wheels and compound give good results on hard and soft metals. I like to wet sand the aluminum parts with increasingly fine paper before buffing to remove imperfections and to expose some 'fresh' metal.

Looking forward to updates.

I use a bench grinder 3/4 hp It sounds like your doing and using the same thing as i am. I think it depends on the parts condition
"smoothness" scratches and other imperfections are hard to buff out. Wet sanding the part first with 600 then better helps with scratches.
Tips > when you think it looks good keep buffing lol

My girl friend and me went to the long beach motorcycle swap meet to day looking for 50 parts what a bust! We did see a few frames and z50 rims but that was about it. I was hoping to find tires for the QA at least but no luck. it seems that the QA will be done with out tires.
on the good side i picked up some small buffing wheels cheep and some trick compound that i want to try!

Update> i got the motor all tore down but the magneto, the puller i have is for a ct70 so a new puller is coming in the mail :45: . All the internal parts looked good but one bearing was shot and one lifter has an odd line might be a crack. i have a crack tester kit that ill do a test on it. Ive ordered a few new parts :shift paw, complete gasket kit,new bearing, seals, rings and a few more parts to come im sure. I really need a lead on the improved shift paw spring? The head still needs to be looked at for leaks.

So meanwhile i worked on the intake sanded it all down smooth and buffed it out. Not quite done but much better looking now.
