QA50 K0 found in Arizona

Until a month ago I had never heard or seen of a QA50. Browsing the local CL with some extra cash burning a hole in my pocket I stumbled across an ad with a picture of a unique mini bike. A deal was made and it was mine. Sorry, no 'as bought' pictures, but it does qa50.jpgbikes 037.jpgbikes 027.jpgbikes 028.jpgbikes 033.jpgbikes 034.jpgbikes 036.jpg have some rust and had been sitting for some time.

Compression was good and the stator was making voltage. Replaced coil, plug and connector for spark plug. Rebuilt the carb. Fired right up with some new fuel and oil in the engine.

Wheel halves were rusted through. Tank was rusted through. The sides of the seat are rusty too.

Coming together quickly. Just some TLC and necessary parts to make it a nice runner for the neighborhood and local trails. It is hard for me not to strip it all down and polish and powdercoat everything.

the first picture above is how it was when I purchased it. Can't wait to ride it. Hopefully the second gear fix has been performed already.

Been riding the QA around the neighborhood for the last week. Everyone seems to like the little bike. Gets lots of smiles. Still need to do something about the muffler and the seat, but for now it is a fun thing to ride over to the friends' houses.

so far, so good. Second gear is not an issue as of yet and it does have some miles on it. Not the fastest thing on 2 wheels, but does get a lot of smiles. No leaks from original engine. Everything as it should be. Except the exhaust.....

any QA50 owner out there who did a custom exhaust for this thing? I really don't want to pony up for the real thing right now. Just something a bit quieter.

It has been awhile, but the QA50 can be considered done! Finally stepped up and spent the cash on the items that needed to be fixed. New muffler from RE-MX, nice set of used fenders in awesome condition, new seat cover and padding, and finally an NOS luggage rack. Really did not need the rack, but when and where was I going to find another one later?

Removed engine, cleaned the oxidation and oil from the case with a cup brush on a dremel and replaced all the oil seals and points. Still no leaks after 30 miles. Muffler seemed to smoke lightly for a bit after installation, but has since been ok. Really nice product. Pricey, but I did not want to chance a used muffler that turned out to be less than what I expected. This is the last muffler this bike will have. The only thing left is to install a kickstand.

Maybe some small bicycle lights also to keep me visible in the neighborhood when it gets dark out. Super cool bike that should see some trails in the next couple weeks. Will post pictures from the adventure.

Nice job. I always like the QA's
A kid in the area owned one and we all hung around at a farm in the area. (sometimes for work but more often for riding the farm trails)
He decided to go bring the cows in for the evening milking using his QA.
We were all just hanging around and we heard some screaming in the distance. When we turned around he was heading
for us with the little thing pegged as fast as it would go and the girls (cows) in hot pursuit. LOL
We waited until the last possible second and opened the gate so he could make his escape.
He got a little bigger bike a few weeks later. : )

Update Su mmer of 2014.

The little bike has been running well with no work required. Even bought a nice rack to haul it around on the front of my 70's VW bus. Took it up to the local mountains during a camping trip. Found that it was fine around the campsite, but it had trouble getting up some longer hills. It could be that I am too heavy for it (165 lbs) or that it needs a valve adjustment. Have not had the heart to do a compression test on it right now. Just nice to ride around here and there.

Once I get my friend's CT70 finished and my '74 XR75 done I will get back into the QA50.

Update March 2015.

I took the QA50 to work to 'race' a co-worker on his z50. The QA ran great the night before and has never let me down since I've owned it. When I got it to work, the thing would not run, and when it did was low on power. It would start and run, but then die shortly after riding it very shortly. Had to make the walk of shame pushing back to my stall past all the guys at the shop.

It sat there, in the back by the workbench gathering dust and whatnot for about 7 months.

Yesterday I went in to figure it out. Turns out the point gap opened up. Fixed the gap after making a new wire from the points to the 'main harness'. Started right up after flushing out the old fuel and adding new with a bit of Sta-Bil in it.

Right now it is a one-kick start deal. It is good to have it back ready for the easy trail on some camping trips.

Still have not had an issue with second gear on this transmission. Thought I felt it slip out once, that's all. This bike has been worry and problem free during my ownership.

The walk of shame... damn. Who hasn't taken that walk at some point or other in his life, for whatever reason??? I know I have, LOL. But it's all relative, OldManAZ, when viewed in the grand scheme o' things. Reminds me of a time when some hand (another OTR driver) was ranting over the CB about an incident on the road, a near-collision with a four-wheeler or whatever, and his rant was interrupted by a third hand who said, "And if that's ALL that happens to you today, driver, consider yourself LUCKY..." And ain't that the truth? Moi, I always used to tell other drivers, "ANY DAY YOU DON'T KILL A WAGONLOAD OF KIDS IS A GOOD DAY!!!" The important thing, OldManAZ, is that you persevered and got that little bike running right again, and to heck with whatever ANYBODY ELSE thinks, yeah??? Even if you work with those folks who saw you make that so-called "walk of shame." I reckon you should take the bike back for a rematch, maybe the other guy's bike will take a dump on HIM this time, LOL. I see that you use your bike for the same purposes I do, to ride trails and perhaps cruise a few dirt roads and whatnot... sure is fun on these little bikes, I haven't quite dialed mine in the exact way I want it, but it'll soon be ready to roar through Bear Valley and Corral Canyon OHV areas. Hopefully, I don't get the drubbing I received on my first outing, learning to ride all over again on these little 8" wheels, LOL. Upon my return, I felt like Marlon Brando in that classic flick "ON THE WATERFRONT"---but instead of squawking about being a contender, "I COULDA BEEN A POSTER CHILD FOR OBAMACARE!!!"

LOL.

Now that I'm older and wiser, I am completely shameless in all aspects of life. Certain Zen Buddhist writings and proverbs have helped me move past any prior shame I felt over ANYTHING that ever happened in my life. One classic Zen proverb I like runs as follows:

"IF YOU ARE FILLED WITH DESIRE, YOUR SORROWS SWELL LIKE THE GRASS AFTER THE RAIN... BUT IF YOU SUBDUE DESIRE, YOUR SORROWS FALL FROM YOU LIKE DROPS OF WATER FROM A LOTUS FLOWER."

You really wanted to beat that hand on his Z50, which is why the cosmos (and your bike) took a dump on you and made you take that "walk of shame"---realizing that none of it matters, that it'll all be the same in a hundred years, well, THAT realization will set you free and let ya LAUGH about the incident, 10-4??? Of course, I still think you should go back with your bike and make a fresh challenge, this time backing it with a C-note, LOL. Just my $.02, my own warped perspective on your situation, as far as racing the bikes goes... moi, I'd be happy just to ride the bike down uncrowded trails and dirt roads, no other riders in sight (except maybe my friends). That whole "Keeping up with the Joneses" number is highly overrated, especially on the material side: I've been surrounded by rich wanks for much of my life, and though I have way less in material terms, I'm richer by far in life experience, and THAT is what really counts, I reckon. So here's hoping ya get to ride that little bike of yours in the near future, preferably down a cool trail with primo scenery and maybe some wildlife. Nothing wrong with seeing a few wild birds and cactus flowers, maybe a nice kick@$$ view of the landscape... enough said, I'm outta here, color me gone, ADIOS!!!

Well, just for the record, the other guy with the Z50 didn't bring it in the next week anyways. He is good guy and the 'race' was nothing more than showing off our bikes to our co-workers. Everyone at work knows me as the guy who likes 'old' bikes and give me tips on something they see on CL or whatever.

Thanks for the kind thoughts. I am older and wiser also (43) and have earned my reputation at work, but am not too proud to get stumped or make a mistake. At a younger age I thought I knew everything. Now, I am not too sure. There is always an opportunity to learn from a failure.

Thankfully the 'walk of shame' was only about 100 yards. I prefer to think of it as the 'stride of pride'.

I can think of many activities far more embarrassing than walking a minibike or monkeybike the length of a gridiron... hell, when I had to wheel my bike back to the campground for repairs last time out, I was HOPING for some witnesses, LOL. Would've made the task easier with a little laughter involved, I reckon. But no worries, I'm looking forward to riding my little bike on some cool trails in the immediate future, and posting shots of those trails right here at this site.

Edit: With regard to failure, is there ANY better way to learn??? Some succeed too easily, usually with "Daddy's Checkbook" in the background to cover all mistakes... believe me, I've seen PLENTY o' that right here in Coronado, and I always ask myself, "Who's the better man? The one who eventually succeeds on his own despite all obstacles, or the one who has his way paved for him, the worthless p.o.s.?" I guess we all know the answer to that one... AYE???
