starting with no key

I just got a 1970 trail 70, but it had no key and the tumbler was dismantled. I am wondering what is the easiest way to make it run. Can I just put some wires together to make it kick start. Now it seems to fire when I kick start it but wont run.

it sounds like you need to check for spark, if you got one, it should run without the key. mine was set up with the jumper wire across the two black wires where the battery plugs in when i got it, it looks factory, but i don't know. make sure to check your stop/run switch on the right bar.

You'd be surprised, but almost anything will turn that ingnition to "on." Stick a flathead screwdriver in there and turn it. If it won't kickstart, then put it in third and run it down a hill until it fires up; you know, jumpstarting?

I have tried jump starting it and it fires but it wont keep running it just slows down and dies. Right now I have all the wires to the key pulled out and it seems to make no difference with them plugged in or off. Any help would be great.

I would start by buying a igniton switch. Then make sure your points are new and gapped, and opening and closing properly, nothing is worse than being cheap with a machine that goes up in value...Only Mac giver can keep a bike runnining with glue paper clips and duct tape! :D

hot wiring

There is a wiring harness that comes out of the magnito and goes in behing the air cleaner area in the frame. Trace the harness and unplug it. Take a jumper wire from the black wire that comes from the magneto and jump it to the small black wire located under the seat that goes to the coil. This wire has a plastic coating on it and you can trace it with a flashlight going down to the coil. Although if you have your ignition unplugged and no wires touching it should still have spark but just run the jumper wire and also it is crucial to have your points set to the correct gap and make sure they are clean and make good contact. I have had points that look good but wont provide spark. Just replace them for under $10.00 and have fun on your bike.

There's one overriding reason to have a working ignition switch; it's also the kill switch.

Your running problem most likely has to do with a dirty carburetor or low compression. If there's no spark, then it won't fire at all...period. Ignition is an either/or proposition, it either works or it doesn't, except in rare instances.
