Headlight Bucket and Trim Ring

I can't get the trim ring to fit onto the bucket. Is the ring supposed to catch this tab on the bucket? It doesn't look deep enough for the ring to fit into it. I can't get the ring to close on the bucket so the screw holes line up.

Yep, start with the bottom of the chrome ring out from the metal bucket maybe 1-2 inches, hook it on the tab your showing a picture of then swing the bottom into place, try to align the screw hole to the tab before starting the process so your close

If the bucket or the ring is slightly out of round, it will make it a little more difficult. Just wiggle and squeeze and work it in. Rap it here and there with a rubber hammer or tool handle. It'll go, don't force it.

The aftermarket rings dont fit nearly as well as oem.
This has been my experience, also. That said, it really doesn't take a lot of tweaking to get them assembled. And, more times than not, the tighter fit eliminates the annoying buzzing that can occur at certain rpms, due to sympathetic vibration.

Thanks for the help, I got it fixed. This is what I had. My first inclination was to just squeeze it together. It might have worked, but probably not.

I couldn't figure out what was holding things up so I took the headlight out of the trim ring so I could see. The bucket wasn't exactly round and the flanged area was catching on the edge of the ring. It should't have surprised me given the condition of the bike.

A minor adjustment with a hammer and block and it fits fine.

That bucket is supposed to have a threaded tab there to screw the ring to the bucket. Looks to be...disappeared.

There's a square tab with a hole in it that lines up with the hole in the trim ring. Its bent at a 30 degree angle at present. You can barely see it in the top pic if you look through that hole in the trim ring. I'm a little afraid to straighten it at present. I think I'll heat it up a little first.
