Recent Purchase-1971 Z50A K2

Just thought I would share with the group my latest project that I purchased, a 1971 Z50A. It is a pretty complete bike but rode hard and put away wet. As is typical, it sat for many years in somebody's shed/barn and was neglected. I got it home and checked for spark, added a little fuel to the carb and she fired right up. After messaging the carb and a thorough cleaning i got it running and idling just fine. Put a new tube in the front tire and patched the rear and took it for a ride. It shifts well and runs great.

My plans are a complete tear down and restoration to add to my other three CT70s. I'll replace worn parts and restore the others. I'm not a fan of the Mexican Yellow,so I'm changing color to Saphire Blue/White.

Stay tuned, I'll update as I make progress.

You got a nice Z there! It looks complete, and it's not too beat up at all. I'm a big fan of K2s...I like ALL the colors. Yellow K2 was my first Mini Trail, and I still have it. But I think my blue, may be the beautifulest one.
You have a great lookin stack of CTs too!

Nice find - I like the K2 with that long back fender which is usually broken on missing along with the taillight bracket - both are hard to find. You're in good shape given the looks of this one - keep us posted on progress.

Time for an update.

I got the bike torn down and I sent the frame, headlight bucket, exhaust guard and front fork assembly to Lil' Bikes Restoration for paint. They did an excellant job doing the color change and lined the fuel tank. I also made a pretty substantial order to both CHP and NEVC for parts. Got the frame back this week, looks great. Also had the wheels and seat pan blasted and epoxy primed, ready for paint. I painted the wheel halves with PPG single stage Acryllic Eurothane (Designated MTK) Honda Cloud Silver, PPG paint code 33778. They turned out very nice as I polished parts of the hubs also. I got the front springs rebuilt too. I'm ready to start assembly of the frame and wheels and then tackle detailing the engine. It ran good and had 110 psi of compression so other than a good cleaning, detail, and some paint for the covers that should be all it needs. See pics.

As luck would have it, a friend hooked me up to a Craigslist ad for another Z50. This one is a 1968 and quite complete also. Got it running just for fun but it is in the queue to be restored after I finish the blue one. This stuff is addicting! I'll follow this post with one of pics of the new('68) Z50.
Enjoy!

Here's some pics of the latest purchase 1968 Z50K0, Engine #Z50AE-116933, Frame #Z50A-116869. Only 64 units apart! Definitely original engine/frame. Seat is missing and she has been sitting quite a while. Tires are rock hard and brake cables are stuck. Throttle works and after a good carb cleaning I got it to run and idle on its own.

If you get a chance can you check out the frame and tank build dates- I'm just curious. The tanks is located here-

The frames is here-

Gary,
The K2 which was originally Mexican Yellow, has a date on ID tag of 11/70. The tank has the number 1118 and the frame has a date of 701120.
not sure how to decifer these numbers, maybe let me know if they help. The red K0 has no ID tag and no numbers stamped on bottom of tank. I don't have the rear wheel off yet to see anything inside of frame.

Just comparing numbers trying to learn. 701120 on your frame tells you it was stamped 1970 November 20th which corresponds to your tag 11/70. Gas tank has me wondering since that is stamped 1971 January 1st. My tank is stamped 1969 August 28 for a September 69 bike and I assume the same for the frame but the month has been scraped off. Now I'n curious if replacement tanks were date stamped or even if other Honda models tanks were stamped

Looking great. What did you use for the clear? I have to redo mine sometime, the spray I used was from work and has not held up.

I just used Dupli-Color Clearcoat from a spray can. I would have liked to use a eurothane clear, but you can't buy less than a quart and I don't have the need for that much paint. it turns out pretty good, lay on a nice easy light coat and let it dry. I coat after I wet sand the aluminum pieces with 400 up to 1000 grit paper and then buff on a wheel. I've used it on polished parts on my other CT70s and it still looks good.

So I needed a new rear fender and the ones available from the usual vendors were actuallly for the K1s, but were close. I decided to search a little more on eBay and found a K2 fender with the ducktail as it should have. It is a bit pricey at 180 bucks and comes from Viet Nam, so it takes a bit longer to receive. I decided to take a chance. It arrived yesterday and I couldn't be more impressed. This thing is outstanding! I have bought a lot of parts, both OEM and repro, for everything from classic cars to ATVs and CT70s and this piece is stunning. The chrome is as good as show chrome and the fit and finish is excellant. I see this vendor (cb750pro) has pieces for other Hondas so I wouldn't hesitate to purchase from them again. Check out pix.

Back to work...

Well, it's been a while since I posted, so here is an update. Disassembled the engine and cleaned all the parts and reassemled. Head looked good as well as the cylinder. Used my ultrasonic cleaner to clean all the parts and they came out real nice. Painted the side covers cloud silver and ran the engine on the test stand. Also, check out the black deposits in the clutch as it works as a centrifugal filter. Cleaned all that out and replaced clutch plates. Got engine looking and running good.

After engine was complete I painted the original seat pan after it was blasted. I got a new seat foam and seat cover and installed them.

Had to use my hydraulic press to compress the foam to get seat cover on.

Looked pretty good when done for an amateur upholstery guy.

Also painted the tail light bracket black and cut and buffed the original tail light lens.

Bike is coming along nicely. Will install engine and wiring harness and make sure all circuits work.

Turned out very nice and that rear fender looks like it has right curve to it. Glad to get some feedback on that fender.
