Titling and registration, by state

25 years old or older, bill of sale is all that us needed. There are 2 papers you need to get from the BMV or online at the BMV. You need to have both these present, and a police needs to come inspect your bike. (not sure if it has to be "street legal" at that time or not). Police will sign papers (one is an "affadavid" or something like that. You will get your title onthe mail 1-2 weeks later.

I have not personally done it. A close friend did so on a cb750 a few weeks back.

I will update when I get mine going shortly as to the costs of title and reg.

Pennsylvania is tough, but not impossible. Basically you have to file a DL135 with the state to determine if their is a title out there in someone else's name. If there is nothing, you fill out a form and file it in at your county's courthouse in motion's court. You then go in front of a judge and get them to sign a court order granting you ownership of the bike. You take that court order to a messenger service and file the MV-1 and your title comes a few weeks later. I estimated the cost of the process to be around $150 - $200 (you have to pay to file the DL-135, the MV-1 and to file the motion at the courthouse).

Back to step #1, if information comes back with a title in someone else's name, you have to pay the Sheriff to serve that person with a copy of your motion to give them the opportunity to show at the hearing and express any interest in the bike !!!

Here is a link to the forms and instructions that you will need to go through this process:

I was going to do this for my bikes, but I think it'd be easier to throw the bike in the back of my truck and go out of state to a friend in IN or NY and have them get a title and transfer it to me... !!!

Anyone dealing with/has dealt with this in TEXAS? '70 ct70. I do not have a title. No blinkers and no mirrors. I'd love to be driving it around the neighborhood legally. Also, it is a 72cc - I suppose I do need a motorcycle license. Correct?

Does anyone know the rules for Illinois? We have two bikes that we need titles for. I recieved a bill of sale from the previous owner of my '70. Does anyone know how I go about getting a proper title in my name for it?

To get a title in Washington

First I had the dmv run the vin if there was a owner on record you can contact them buy them a beer and have them sign a release of interest. Then you are good to go you’ll have your title in 2 – 3 weeks.
If that came up with nothing then you will have to get a vin inspection done by the Washington state patrol. One good tip is if you go to the DMV and start the process and pay for everything all at once you can get issued a 60 day temp plate till you get inspected.
After inspection it will take 3 years to get issues a title but while you wait your get a registration. I think the whole processes cost me about $150 and I was legally ridding that hour. The cops don’t like seeing the temp tag on a 40 year old bike there like how the hell did you get that? I got pulled over a bit for mine it was getting frustrating.

you can do something like this, HERE

Or go the way Oak and I are doing it. But our route is taking forever. It's horribly annoying at this point. At least for me it is. Oak might have more patience. Or maybe he's just going out at night and punching babies to relieve the stress. PM him for more details about what we're doing to get titles. It involves bill of sale, photos, money, and the desert. No joke.

Last time I went though this person with a title service it took 6 weeks. This time it's a different story, and it's pretty damn annoying. But it's not like your bike is being kept in your garage for lack of title BURRRRRRRRRRRRNNNNNNNNNNN

how much did that ITS cost ?

Beware of ITS. I have recently read in several posts, that several States no longer accept their paperwork and the prices are over $200.00 now. What State are you from "Fishin"? Check with a local DMV/BMV some States are easier to title in than others.

Vermont is how I have done this with my CT90 and soon my ST90. It takes Vermont Form VD119 and you will also want the companion instructions with Form 119. Vermont does not title any bike older than 15 years or smaller than 300 cc's but they will register a bike and give you a plate. Get this for a year and then take it to your state and they should honor it, especially if you have the companion instructions explaining the "no title" aspect. All Vermont wants is a validly signed bill of sale and sometimes an inspection from your state. You also should call the Help Desk in Montpelier to get an agreed upon value for your bike because they will want a reasonable value, not the low ball price that many of us get these bikes for. I paid $65 or so for my CT90 and $71.75 or so for my ST90 and it took me maybe two weeks of wait time.

Hey Jay, Were you able to get your CT 70 "Street Legal" in Washington? I am in SW Washington and have a clear title and registration for my 1970 CT 70 but they would only give me off road tags even though it had a previous street plate. Some excuse about thier data base being purged and they had no record that far back. Anyway, what is the secret to going that next step and making it street legal in Washington? I mainly just want to ride the forest roads but even that requires the street plates. Has to be a way.

Michigan, not that easy

I just titled all three of my bikes in Michigan. One already had a title and cost $15 plus 6% sales tax on the purchase price. I did not have to show any documentation on that bike but the title. My other to ct's I had no paperwork for. I had to fill out a simple form called an ownership certification it can be found at SOS - Publications and Forms. That is all the documentation I had to show. The title cost $30.00 plus 6% of the sales price. Title should be comming in two weeks. Then need title with proof of insurance to get plates.

What am I doing wrong. After reading your post and you making it sound so easy I went to the SOS to get a title for my 1974. I provided the SAME form as you (ownership certification). But they typed in the vin and said no record exists for vehicle. Now they want me to schedule an Inspection to see if it is roadworthy with the police. This would be okay except I don't have mirrors (repro handle bars don't have mounting holes) And my exhaust my be regarded as excessively noisy. I dont get it....a title does not mean you can drive it on the road or that I am going to drive it on the road, that is a licence plate. why do i have to prove its roadworthy to get it in my name?? I dont want to have to purchase new exhaust and mirrors that I don't want just to be able to say it is "mine".

I hate the SOS and Police...and Government :33: :45:

any helpful replies much appreciated!!!

MICHIGAN

Went to SOS armed with this form. http://www.michigan.gov/documents/tr-205_16198_7.pdf cost 15$ for them to give me a new title. This title was listed as ORV only. They would not give me a road legal title until I had a police officer stop out and complete http://www.michigan.gov/documents/TR-54_38480_7.pdf this vehicle inspection form. That is free of charge. After I got my inspection form filled out I went back to SOS and brought my ORV title and full coverage insurance from state farm for aprox 15$ a month. Had to pay another 15$ for a NEW title without ORV ONLY on it. And they gave me a plate and tabs right there for 20$ new road legal title is in the mail.

In hind sight I would have a police officer come out and do your vehicle inspection sheet and complete the owner form BEFORE going to sos then maybe you can get your road legal title right off the bat. They will only give you a ORV title without an inspection so you might as well come in with it already completed. Then you will just need insurance to get the plate. Just got mine yesterday! Woot! Hope this helps!

PS: When you do the certificate of ownership form they will do a check on the VIN to make sure it isn't listed as stolen, it can take up to an hour so you will be at SOS for awhile!

VERMONT:

Following is from Vermont DMV Website:

Vermont now titles all vehicles fifteen (15) years old or newer (based on calendar year) except:
• Trailers with empty weight of 1,500 lbs. or less
• Motorcycles with engine size smaller than 300 cubic centimeters
• ATV's/Mopeds
• Tractors with loaded weight 6,099 lbs. or less

From conversation with C.S. Rep at Montpelier DMV:

Registration, insurance and Vermont State inspection is required for all motor driven vehicles that will be operated on the roadways or public lands of Vermont.

Registration requires B.O.S (they have a B.O.S. form on their website to make things go smoother Home | Vermont Department of Motor Vehicles) and it’s always good to bring in previous registration info if available.

Vermont will not issue new titles (as defined above) even if the old title exists.

A Motorcycle Endorsement on your license is required by all road riders in Vermont (except for Motor Driven Cycle classification, engine 50cc or smaller then no endorsement needed.

Added Note:
I just talked to the DMV today, they have a 6% tax due at time of registration and will charge you on the value of your purchase or the price they have listed for the bike, which ever is more (this didn't make sense to me the first time i registered but what this means is they have a minimum taxable sale amount of 200.00 and if you got your bike cheaper they still charge you on 200.00. If you got your bike for 800.00 they charge you tax on that. The only thing they go by is what you and the seller have listed on the bill of sale. So, it would behoove any purchaser intending to register in Vermont to have the sale price listed as 200.00 regardless of actual cost. That way you pay the least amount of tax. You do not need to be a Vermont resident (having an address outside the state is fine) to register a vehicle in the state. For my 1970 CT70 the value they have is $900.00. For my '73 ST90 they said $850.00. Registration for a year is $41.00

Any companies in Michigan that do the retitle thing, I hear Michigan and Georgia are two of the easiest states to get titles. I'm hoping to find some company in Michigan or Georgia that can get me a title, like I send them money and motorcycle info, they get the title and sell it back to me so I can go onto get plates in my state "which is Texas" and have a nice new title. Know anybody that does this?
