The White beater project!

Kinda makes you wonder why we never got a white CT70 model in North America...instead of seven years of red (with a name change). Those white-painted wheels, of the `90s models, would have looked good paired with a white frame. This bike has more visual appeal than the sought-after "Lady Dax/White Dax". Very effective use of color contrast.(y)

FWIW, I agree with you...that seat would be a really nice "grace note", one of those subtle details that doesn't call attention to itself but adds to the overall impression. It also fits the theme you've created, i.e. white background with those brightly-hued `78 tank stripes & red sidebadges.

In that same vein, thin red pinstripes on the rim shoulders (the outermost portion that sits above the bead seats) would really make the all-black wheel assemblies pop. (Just thinking out loud.)

thank you, and i completely agree, i will think about the red stripe on the rims as i do like that as well!!! thanks again.

Did you remove the black vin tag when you painted it? I noticed it covered in duct tape during paint removal and wondered if you removed it or painted around it...

I was wondering that, too. Didn't see it in the later pix...and I know that it won't survive PC curing temps.

well, i was going to remove it and save it, but i put my son to work with the grinder removing left over paint i couldn't get to with sandblaster, and he grinded the tagged!!! i was screaming piss off, i keep yelling and telling him I'm piss but is not your fault. haha

Ouch!!!

There aren't many options when it comes top replacing this piece. There's an ebay seller, located in Switzerland, who repops them and will engrave your numbers. Last I checked, and it's been several months now, this cost ~$65 all-in. I know that might seem like a lot...and...considering the processes involved, it is a tad salty. All things considered (trust me, this is the short version) it's reasonable. The full explanation is lengthy. Suffice it to say that if this were my bike, I'd want to get a replacement ASAP and be done with it. FWIW...

Believe me, you're not the first to make the big vin tag booboo. We've seen it more than a few times before. Lots of guys think they can tape them up, then sandblast around them. Some end up with REALLY fuzzy edges, some disappear completely.

When planning to STRIP and paint a frame, removal should be step one. And, taping them off and painting around them usually ends up with telltale signs of...being taped off and painted around.

Two caveats...

Make sure the seller will stamp or engrave the numbers; and, be sure he has the correct style for your model/year. There's very little demand for post-K1 and it just gets smaller with each successively later year.

Hey thanks a lot, its done before, I saw one like this awhile back and I love it, ever since I knew I wanted to do a white one. Almost use 79 stickers since I own a 79 too but I think the 78 strippes gives it a go look.

Any progress with this build? Just interested in seeing your finished project.

hey, sorry for the late reply,
so everything is pretty much ready, just gotta wire up the headlight, twilight and horn.
Sat. Dec 22 was the first test drive, everything was great till my chain snap, not sure why, maybe i didn't set it up correctly or the locking pin on the master link came loose? i fixed it on sunday and ran great, its was 23*F so pretty cold to do long rides.
let me know you're input!

Great lookin bike Ozpall. Paint and decals look really good, black wheels and meaty tires look tuff to me. But I do think you need to put a good big taillight in the back, to fill that space.

Nice work!

The minimalist/bobber look is working well on this machine.(y)

I do, however, see a 70mph road bike here. You need a tail light. Running fenderless might not be very practical, especially up-front. If you want to go low-buck, the original fenders would fit your theme refinished in PC "chrome"; the look is more accurately described as soft-polished aluminum. Alternatively, you could source a low-mount (12v style) front fender; the Chinese knockoffs are okay and a LOT cheaper than OEM. At the rear, you'll really want something to shield the wheel arch from road debris, or you'll eventually end up with rust freckles.

I would grab some rusty stock fenders, blast them and then either PC or plastidip them flat black to match other black parts of the bike. You could get an LED tail light to match the bike’s theme as well. Regardless, I think the bike looks great! (y)(y)

thank you,
that was my original plan, plastic dip the fenders that i got, there is a led tail light and rear fender there already, the angle of the pic doesn't let it see.

Tail light not essential in the dirt... those riders behind ya will be too busy chokin' on the dust & spittin' rocks outta their teeth to roll up on ya, LOL. On the street it's another story, ya need all the visibility you can get...

so i got a new taillight, mounted my license plate, and bar end mirrors. ended up putting stock fenders on since i got them for free, not in the best shape but free and they'll do the job for now.
