'72 SL70 beater project

I'd like to introduce my '72 SL70 beater project:

It has a bit of an identity crisis going with that Kawasaki green paintjob. The first order of business (beyond getting it running in top shape), will be to peel off all the goofy stickers, replace the midget front fender, and paint it a more respectable shade. I'm thinking of toning it down to more of an olive drab, maybe something like what this guy did:

As you can tell, I'm not a purist.

I found it on CL for peanuts. It runs and shifts ok, but it's definitely in need of some love. Its most glaring issue is a pair of leaky fuel petcocks. Yes, a pair. I think it might have a non-standard carb on it (Keihin, but I couldn't find any numbers on it), and judging by the gaping hole under the seat a non-standard air filter as well. Who knows whether its jetted properly.

Beyond fixing the leaking petcocks, a fork rebuild is in my future. Does anyone know of a good source for the rebuild parts? I can measure/size new seals and orings on my own, but if there's a pre-gathered kit somewhere I'd prefer to just buy that.

The guy I bought it from also reports that it "smokes like a two stroke". Who knows if that's because he was running it on pre-mix or if it needs a set of rings. I have a standard compression tester, any ballpark range on a reading for this engine? Any any suggestions for good deals on a rebuild kit? How interchangeable is my SL70's engine with the rest of the 70s? Are they all mostly the same? This will definitely be a low-budget, beater rebuild so I'm not worried about using only OEM parts or things like that. I'd like to refurb/rebuild/reuse parts whenever possible unless it is simply cheaper to buy a replacement.

Aside from that, the bike seems to be in OK shape. It definitely needs some new tubes, and the tires themselves are cracked and dry rotted. If there's a hot setup for these let me know, otherwise I'll probably just go the cheapest route (it is a beater after all!).

Also, my knowledge of this era of bikes is limited to what I've seen in my one afternoon of ownership plus the few threads I've clicked through here. I apologize in advance for any dumb questions, please take it easy on me! For the most part I'll at least try reading some threads in a search before asking out of the blue.

So howdy to the forum! Hopefully I'll have some updates with my progress before long!

Most of the parts you need are available from TBparts. If you prefer OEM, I like cmsnl.com for OEM part #s, go to your dealer and order.

The fender is going to be a tall order.

The carb appears to be off of an ATC110/125M. Much too large for that mill. The air cleaner however, is correct.

Smokes like a 2 stroke could be anything from valve seals to cylinder bore. Check out TBparts and their 88cc kit and high flo oil pump if your head turns out to be OK... having said that they are rare to find in good shape.

The SL70 is a dead swap for any honda 50/70cc four stroke horizontal. However, what engine you have is the question; have a look behind the shifter shaft and you will find a number SL70.... so on. It may well be CT70, XL70, z50 etc. The black cylinder and auto trans suggest ct70/z50... definately 3 speed semiauto.

I personally am going to love this thread so please post often and lots of pics.

Cheers to you and your new bike.

Any thoughts on whether this front fender might work for me?

UFO Front Fender - DennisKirk.com

Again, I'm not too concerned with authenticity or even looks, I'm more concerned about not getting rocks in my face when I ride! Its for CRF50s, do you think the size/radius might be "about" right? I'm not opposed to cut/grind work it to make it fit

I'm planning to tear into the petcocks and carb this weekend, replace some seals, then fill 'er up and give it a proper shakedown ride. I'm sure I'll have more questions for you guys after that. Thanks for all the info so far!

Ok, ordered new tubes for the tires. Found the seals I need for the petcock from bikebandit too. So I think I should be able to have it back and running within a week or so. I also was able to compare my carb with some web pics and I think its one of those $30 webllc ones...

carb items - Get great deals on Dirt Bikes, Trail Bikes items on eBay Stores!

Also found a spot on the tank where the paint was worn away by the seat through every layer. At least 5 coats thick, including blue, yellow, red, yellow again, blue x2, and then green showing. Sweet.

Very cool little bike! too bad someone made off with the original motor, the 1down 3up shifter and 4 speed make for a nice combo. I dig that custom intake manifold tho!
I just got a K0 SL70 running last weekend, the one thing that stuck out was how solid this bike feels over my CT70 K1 - that has less miles on it. The first mini I ever rode that feels similar to a big bike as far as handling goes. One downside to the SL70's is how difficult it is to source rubber parts, even many listed on Babbits are no longer available, they have canceled several items I thought I bought for mine. So what started out as a full resto evaporated into a "rider" for now till I can find some parts.

I've had good luck sourcing rubber parts through BikeBandit.com so far. I got my replacement inner tubes in the mail today, and just placed the order for the fuel seals. I added the shifter and kick start lever rubber pieces in this order as well, we'll see if they actually show up. About 5 seals and those two rubber pieces came out to less than $20. Not bad at all.

The seals and shift/brake rubbers showed up this weekend, I put everything together last night. Tonight I'll fill up the old tubes for a quick test ride before pulling the wheels to replace the tubes.

Should I put talc powder between the tube and tire? Or anything else? Or just slip it in and ride?

I've been fiddling with the bike more lately. I replaced the leaking seals and am able to deliver fuel to the carb without issue now. I can usually get it started after a few kicks, sometimes with the help of starting fluid. It runs like crap. I have to give it ~40% throttle to start, and it will pop and gag for about 30 seconds until it finally starts combusting every time. After it comes to life I can ease back on the gas and it will settle down to an idle where it will either slowly die or I can gently rev it up with about 1% throtle per sec. Opening the throttle too fast makes it behave like I've hit the kill switch.

I'm really new to carbs, I'm an EFI nerd. Knowing that the carb is oversized makes me think its running lean. Not enough airflow to get sufficient vacuum/venturi action for proper air fuel ratios. Or it just has the wrong size jets/needles/settings. After fiddling with the screws for an hour or two, I'm ready for one of those $40 carbs I've seen some guys rave about on here. Can anyone suggest a specific one to try? Unless you guys have some better tips on how to mess with the one I already have? Thanks!
