Bandit Bill's CT70 Redneck Build (along with other small Honda's)

Wow, it's been a while since i was on this site...

To recap, I bought a '76 CT70 (among a few other CT70's generally defined as loose collections of parts more or less bolted together) as the basis for a project in August 2007. At that time, the CT70 looked like this:

I rode it a few times that year, before the hard frosts of fall hit, and then I parked it in the garage. Upon pulling it out of the back of the garage within the first weeks of the next spring, a few kicks resulted in nothing. Further investigation showed that the Muppet who had sold me it, had stripped a head stud out of the cases, and instead of effecting a proper repair, had epoxied it back in place, crossed his fingers, and sold it on to this poor unsuspecting sucker.

Unfortunately, i had also got sick in that Spring of 2008, and well up until a few weeks ago was un-well, to the point of not being able to do more than check to see if it was still leaning against the back wall of the garage.

However, recently, i happened upon a kijiji advertisement for a new condition, previously unused Lifan 140cc motor and picked it up.

My intentions with this project are two-fold - build one CT70 based upon the '76 model and the Lifan motor, and with the spare parts remaining from the other parts bikes, as well as parts replaced from this one, build up a stock motor-based 88cc CT70 later on.

Now, this is where it gets funny. My garage is seriously full - and i'm still too shaky health-wise to spend much time out there anyway... so, the build is going on in the living room - on the coffee table to be precise. I will be emptying the garage of one bike eventually, to make room - to sell it off in order to help finance these projects, but until that happens, the living room it is.

As it sits, two evenings ago.

This particular project will see essentially two stages, based upon parts order intervals. The first major order will be to get all components necessary to have it up and running - electrical, exhaust, cooling, chain and sprockets, and all the miscellaenious small bits to complete a 'runner'. The second stage will involve replacing both front and rear suspensions, and the necessary components to 'upgrade it' cosmetically. It will not be done with stock components, or stock appearances in mind - if it works, it fits, and i like it, then it is good enough for me.

At that point, i'll have pretty much all of the components to start concurrent work on the second 88cc CT70, based upon a '78 frame, and four motors that i have on hand in parts or whole.

Not directly related to this, but along the same lines, I recently got ahold of the descendant of the first 'motorcycle' i owned, which was a 1966 Honda C65 Cub. The call of nostalgia proved too strong, and a 1981 Honda C70 Passport came home with me recently.

I'll be collecting parts for this over time, with the mind of making it a clean runner project - but for now, it runs pretty good, and is currently put to use as a corner-store getter, since bicycling at this time is no longer an option due to physical issues.

Stay tooned..

I love the work bench. I would get away with that for about 10 hrs and when the wife got off work, me and the bike both would be living in the garage!

I too laughed at the coffee table doubing as a motorcycle work stand. You are either single or going to be single real soon.

I think it is very obvious what my marital status is to all but the blind - i am a source of constant amusement on what i do in terms of my home environment, from my work mates.. i never fail to surprise!

Well, after sitting on my parts listing for the better part of a month, and adding and subtracting as i saw fit on what the CT70 needed, and what i saw as the CT70 needing to do, I finally pulled the trigger on a parts order.

I decided that the CT70, in terms of use, would lean towards the street side, and ordered accordingly. The opportunities for riding on go-kart (indoor/outdoor) tracks is greater than off-roading around here.

So, from one site, the following has been ordered:

TIRES MICHELIN BOPPER 120/90-10 F OR R - set of 2
Front BRAKE PADS (for the front disk brakes) - Spare parts
CT70 SEAT BLACK
SEAT BRACKET
BRAKE LEVER, Rear wheel
REAR SPROCKET Teeth Number: 44t
FRONT SPROCKET Teeth Number: 15t
Universal Lever and Mount, clutch
CT70 Black and Silver Level 3 Shocks rear
Universal Kill Switch
Billet CNC Front end/Disc Brake Kit 30mm
Carbon Fiber Big Bore Exhaust
BIG HANDLE BARS
30mm Fork Seals Inner - Spare parts
MOOSE 420/428 RXP PRO-MX CHAIN
EXTENDED CT70 REAR SWINGARM KIT +2"

I'm waiting to pull the trigger on another site, for more CT70, and C70 Passport components - they've gone temp out of stock on a C70 Passport exhaust that i'd like to order - once that is in, about 90% of the ordering for the two projects will be done, and I will have enough parts remaining left over to start building the beater CT70, as a bonus.

I'll be further researching and sourcing an oil cooler for the motor in the near future - The motor came with a block-cooler - and i'd prefer a finned type instead. The CT70 is a long way from running at this point, so the oil cooler is of secondary importance to worry about.

A bit of a weekly update.

Parts for the CT70 haven't arrived yet, so that project is idle at the moment, aside from some painting being done to some bits that sorely need it.

On the C70 Passport front, i had a bit of mechanical mayhem fun with it. The CT70's Lifan 140cc motor came with an origin unknown and suspect quality exhaust, that i really didn't groove on in terms of it's fit and finish with the CT70 - so i'd hung it on a hook in the garage and ordered what appeared to be a much nicer exhaust in the parts order last week for the CT70. The C70 Passports stock exhaust is/was in poor condition - it looked like it was cored out with rust, and i wouldn't have been surprised if it had snapped clean in half before too long.

I was having a smoke in the garage yesterday evening, and as usual eyeballed the C70 Passport, and then eyeballed the rejected exhaust, and then the C70 Passport again. The Mark 1 eyeball told me that I just might have something here between the two of them.

A few hours later and some bracketry work, saw the exhaust mounted on the C70 Passport. It fits much better on the C70, then it did on the CT70. Sweet.

Can you tell that i like upswept/high-mounted exhausts? :4:

It may actually be a keeper, so i can go ahead with the parts order at the other online store to get the remainder of CT70 and C70 parts without waiting for the OEM Passport exhaust to be restocked.

Loving the rear tire on your Suzuki, no sissy strips here. Let me know if you need/want a new rear sprocket for your CL, I miss ordered one a few years ago for a CT, can't get rid of it. I work in the Hammer.

Yes, thats an automotive tire on the suzuki - it's a sidecar rig, based upon a Bandit 1200, a full-time conversion with automotive rims on all points of the triangle. It was my last 'big project' in flinging wrenches about the garage. Chicken strips are only good for eating. Want a laugh? This is moi, at Sportbike Rally 2006. Yes indeedy, I am most likely certifiably insane.

Thanks for the offer on the sprocket - I may indeed take you up on that generous offer. I live in Hamilton, but work in Oakville, and North Halton roads are my favorite haunts for local riding. I'm sure our paths will cross sooner or later. I haven't actually inspected the sprocket/chains yet since getting the wee beastie, beyond checking to be sure that they are there.. but the need may well be there.

I like your style. I'm a big fan of the C70, so keep the pics and updates coming.

PM me if you need any random parts for your CT. We might have them lying around.

The C70 is a hoot. I am using that more often now, than i am firing up the 'big bike'. Thanks for the parts offer, it is most generous.. and i'll definitely let you know. However, speaking of which..

I'm going to have to get someone to net-nanny my computer. Kijiji.ca is becoming entirely too dangerous to the remaining space of my garage. Yup, another one followed me home like a very pathetic looking lost puppy-dog last night. A rolling-basket '76 CT70 for $200 and 4 hours travel time. Had to disassemble it to fit it into the back of my two-door hatchback Toyota Yaris. Mostly all there, and what is missing, i think i've got 90% of that which is needed in parts from a '78 and left-overs from the '76 'wild' rebuild. It has seen better days, and was badly stored in a pool-hut at the mercy of humidity... but it'll pretty much guarentee that i'll have everything needed to build up a second '76 model year CT70 that is much closer to original. One wild, one mild. Perfect.

My neighbors are really gonna start wondering wtf is wrong with me. As if they aren't already.

"Not to mention, the skeleton hanging in the background of this picture."

Umm, yeah, well it's hard to get a lively date when you are single, old and essentially not house-broken like me!

In essence, the skeleton ('Charlie') is a rally prop .. but good eye!

Something of a disappointment today - received the shipment of parts for the 'wild one' today. Someone must have missed their coffee in packing out the components - missing items for the exhaust and the front end, and totally missing ordered pieces including the shocks, swingarm and spare brake pads. I'm hoping that either they packed out a 2nd box that they hadn't advised me on, or that they'll make right on this. Not the happiest camper right now with a stalled project. I'll be naming names, if it isn't made right.

BB,

Being from Seattle and going to Vancouver with my wife a fair amount each year :ballchain: (the gaslight district is not the same as it was in my primal youth and without an escort) that being said, shouldn't a Canadian, have someone else other than Hunter S. Thompson as an alter ego?

Inquiring minds want to know. :gossip:

A bit of a mini-update today - no pictures at this time, though progress has been made on the CT70.

Some of the issues with the vendor have been worked out. The original carton that arrived on Wednesday, was mis-labelled '1of1' and created confusion and mayhem to a certain extent. It should have been labelled '1of2'.

'2of2' arrived on Friday, with the swing-arm, the triple tree, and the rear shocks.

There are a few parts still missing - one major one, not at all the fault of the Vendor, but of a part not included when it should have been with the exhaust system by the Chinese manufacturer. The other issues were over-sights, and the Vendor is making good with sending the rear wheel axle, a few miscellaenious nuts and bolts, and a bracket out soonest. The exhaust part will be sent, as soon as he receives the part from the Chinese source. Also, in error, the Vendor sent me Michelin Reggae tires, instead of the Michelin Bopper tires that i had ordered - but, i don't think this a real issue - the error just gives me a bit more off-road capability vs the pure-street Boppers.

At this point i don't think i'll be naming names, or calling anyone names for that matter. Mistakes happen, and the Vendor has done what he needs to do to make things right.

Today, I jacked up the rear end of the CT70, and got to work on it. The 2" over swingarm and 'level 3' shocks have been installed. I also rebuilt a rear wheel out of my collection, installed the new 38 tooth sprocket, and the Michelin Reggae tire. I can't bolt everything entirely together yet, as i am missing the axle bolt that the Vendor is sending post-haste. This gives me a little time to contemplate a conundrum arising out of the 2" longer swingarm.

Simply put, the rear fender no longer fits, and would need some serious frame modification and fill-in to fillet the gap between the repositioned fender and the frame. This won't do, and i'm not prepared to go the frame modification route at this time - maybe sometime later on down the road if i started from scratch with this CT70, and a modified frame. I'll need to somehow relocate the fender 2" rearward. I'm also thinking of fiberglassing up a rear tire hugger, in lieu of the rear fender entirely.

Stay tooned.. pics soon.

This is what i'm contemplating. I'd also fill up the void under the seat/behind the frame with a rear tail light. I'm sure that all the restoration purists are horrified by now :D

It's also the regional vintage swap meet/rally next weekend.. like being a fat kid at a candy-store. I'll be looking for additonal parts, needless to say.

Fender looks sharp Bill, wouldn't change a thing; maybe mount it to the swinger ie. Buell.

That's the plan! .. now, whether to use the stock fender as is and just make the brackets, or use the stock fender as a basic mold and go more hugger than it already looks like now, in fiberglass, and try to color match. Decisions, decisions.
