Bulb Question

I hit up my local auto parts store for some 6v bulbs for my bike, and while they do have bulbs that seem to work, they are all 12V bulbs. Could I use these bulbs on a 6v system?

The OEM bulbs are getting too expensive.

I had a 12v light bulb in my tail light for a few days it was not very bright! I installed a new 6v bulb and man does that thing make the tail light glow
Twice as bright! May be you could try a VW shop they had 6v systems back in the days!
I just ordered mine from DRATV.com

I'd follow the suggestion made in the previous reply. There aren't that many bulbs on a CT70, so the only one that really costs is an OE sealed beam headlight...and those can be changed over to non-sealed beam guts. As I recall, most of the bulbs are less than $4.

Any Honda supplier can provide OE 6v bulbs.

I took some of my burned out signal bulbs to fleet farm auto section and found some that were basically same size and correct voltage - They work fine - other lights prolly have to get from honda dealer or website - So guess u may as well get em all at once from them - Fleet Farm did have both 6 and 12 - They also had the same wattage as my original 1's

Well, Im actaully riding a Z50, and the bulbs cost $11 USD for both, plus shipping to Canada, so it can get a bit pricey. There was another thread on this forum about Home Depot carrying some bright 6v bulbs. Im gonna check them out.

You can get conversion units from Dr. ATV aka Beatrice Cycle. The taillight bulbs in 6 volt should be available in any auto parts store. The signal lights (if you have or need them) can usually be found there also.

There is an option of using a 6 volt LED bulb for the taillamp also. They are available at http://superbrightleds.com/other_bulbs.htm . Look under the "new 6 volt car bulbs banner. The company is pretty good to deal with. Fast shipping and all.

If you need indicator bulbs for a speedo on a ct70, those are available from Beatrice Cycle above. Their direct link is: http://store.yahoo.com/dratv/noname157.html that page should have the conversion headlamp too.

If you get a new chinese motor, most of them are 12 volt, so the bulb issue is not a problem, except that you will need to convert the sealed beam to one with a replacable bulb, or get a whole new headlamp that is 12 volt.

Paid a 1.71 at NAPA for two element 6v taillight bulbs. They stock um for the farmers that still use there 6v system tractors. Lots of folks like to restore old tractors so he keeps them in stock. He also had speedometer bulbs but the bulb part was the size of a gumball. :D

LEDs are a great idea. I've tried sourcing some for instrument lights. A base would have to be improvised, possibly from an old bulb or silicone. The deal-breaker was the silly wattages available at the time.
