CHP Repop Exhaust

No, but need one for a '79. I bought "Muffler kit, CT70 K1-82, Chrome guard, chrome pipe" for $69 and it doesn't fit. Pic below. (I painted the guard holes. It came all chrome.) I had to add an extension to the upper flange, and it doesn't seem seated right on the engine, either. If you bite the bullet and get one of these, let me know how it goes for you.

Based on pic, it appears the bracket that mounts to the shock is too short, as in way too short. I have a used aftermarket exhaust, used oem Honda 79 pipe, and a new OEM honda (DAX version). Will try to post some pics so you can see the difference.

By the way, you have a VERY nice 79!

Here are the pics.

Repop, black, fits fine, can't used oem Honda guards

Used 79 exhaust

New DAX type, OEM honda guards fit fine, does not have a removable baffle like pre 79 mufflers.

Thanks! The restored bike in the pic is really pretty, but 'off'. I have an unmolested '79 that I believe has the original pipe. However... it's held together by some sort of expoxy and metal tape, and I don't have the heart to pull it off right now to compare the two, since the old bike feels, smells and sounds like memories.

After taking another look, I think there must be something wrong with the bend angle on header pipe if you can't raise the pipe any higher. The entire main body looks too low.

What happens when you try pulling the muffler up to the shock mount?? In other words, why doesn't it fit?? Doesn't reach the rear mount maybe??
Many times I've had to tweak the pipe to get it to reach the rear mount. I usually leave it just a little bit loose where it mounts to the engine, then remove the front heat shields from the header, then use a 2x4 in the loop of the header to pry the exhaust toward the rear of the bike until it slips onto the shock mount.

Allenp42, it does seem the bend angle is off. When I seat it snugly on the exhaust port, that's where it naturally falls.

Kirrbby, with my luck, I'd rip the the bottom of the motor off. Crack something critical, at the very least! :)

Ya, I understand. Consider removing the pipe completely, and tweak it a bit. It really IS a pretty common problem. They usually don't need much, but even a quarter of a inch too short will keep you from being able to mount your pipe.

Maybe remove the pipe, and try the hammer handle/2x4 trick. Small tweak, and try to mount it, then another small tweak...

Gonna have to break out my heavy metal playlist for that one. Master of Tailpipes should get me goin'.

Well I can only see half of it in their pics, but it looks good so far. Maybe they will show us both ends someday.

Are there more pics somewhere? Maybe on their eBay listings.

Honda didn't use a 2x4 to install the muffler, so neither should you! o_O See this? It should be in your hand with the 2 head exhaust stud nuts ''2'' threads in, or very loose. Then take the exhaust WITH this and install ''both together'' with your hands to the upper shock stud. Then install the top nut last. And then tighten the 2 lower head studs. Does this make sense? It works every time for me.

Thus far, I've only had to pull hard to get everything to fit on a CT. Maybe I've been lucky. But on Soft Tail Z50's, I have had to tweak the pipe a bit to get it to fit. In this case, 77-79 does not use the extension nut...assuming the exhaust mounting flange has an offset. His aftermarket muffler does have the offset so the extension bolt is not needed. Kirby's method, or tweaking the exhaust off the bike is his only option. I don't know how "stout" the tubing is on a AFT muffler so I'm a little unsure of how I would fix. Being overly cautions, I would try to tweak it off the bike.

Like you, I tend to leave the 2 nuts loose at the exhaust port until I have it mounted at the rear shock.

Question for yellowbullet, is this a drct70411 exhaust? That would explain ALOT! That guy sells some real GARBAGE not worth the price of admission. Nothing he sells is worth a damn. You WILL need a 2x4 to install his crap! LOL!

You are right Al. But if he is using a KO style exhaust, he needs the spacer. I think it is a garbage drct70411 pipe. That no one ever bought here and commented on, until now!

Oddly enough, the Restomod has the extension nut, and it only makes things worse (can't even get all three nuts to start at the same time). Taking the extension off, I can get everything fastened tight, but the angle where it meets the port is *way* off. I started by hanging it on the shock stud, and loosely starting the exhaust studs... no dice. :/ I also tried various combinations of This One first, back off That One, snug up The Other... Nuthin' doin'.

Looks like I got a wonky one.
