Strictly speaking, I don't believe that there is such a thing as a "genuine" rack. These were sold by some Honda dealers back in the early `70s, but to the best of my knowledge they were aftermarket...like buddy pegs.

The link takes you to a vendor who sells what is generally considered the "correct" style. These are available from other vendors as well. The "original" type uses the rear fender and shock mounts as the attaching points and locates the tail light bracket atop the fender mount. The photo in this thread is of a Chinese rack made for a clone bike; it may fit with some minor mods. As you can see in the pic, the Chinese rack uses the shock mounts and rear frame holes as attaching points. Not sure which is "better", that call is up to the individual. However, the main tradeoff seems to be size of the platform (the CT rack is larger) vs a vertical bar and more tie-down points. That vertical bar is more useful than you might think, especially for carrying a gas can securely.

Thanks Legends!!!

So RacerX - do you use a rack? I am getting a mint 1971 CT70 and think a rack would be awesome.

Yeah, I have one bike fitted with the "classic" style. That was the only type available when it was purchased. All three designs currently available have good and not-so-good aspects. Normally, I carry nothing more than a 1-gallon gas can (for trips over 50 miles) and a cable lock. The largest item is a plastic milk crate, used only on camping trips and mainly to haul 10lbs of ice back to the campsite. Any CT70 rack should be able to handle that. Keeping items from contacting the seat uses up some of the added length that makes for a tight fit inside another vehicle. The other two designs are more space-efficient.The deal-breaker, in my view, involves removal of the rack. The classic design dents the fender (no way around this, but the dent isn't visible with the rack in place). The other two will leave scars on both sides of the frame at the rear mounting points. Fender replacement is a cakewalk compared to paint repair.

Honda of Japan makes a basket for the front fold-down bar setup for the Z50J and Dax. Plus, you have to be a man to pull off the basket on the front of your bike..
