What, if anything, does this imply about the knowledge these scammers have regarding their target audience (CT enthusiasts/boomers who have discretionary money) and, by extension, our perceived naievity/vulnerability???

I'm always amazed by the police blotter section of our local newspaper, with its frequent reports of boomers (my peers!) who fall for online scams wherein money is demanded to free our grandkids from alleged legal indiscretions in foreign countries or bogus threats from the IRS/ banks for collections of fees/taxes past due? Are we perceived as a generation of nudniks?

More likely, it's a variation of the old "shotgun approach". In this scenario, more accurately described as "throw enough shit against the wall, some is bound to stick". It's easy enough to ferret-out the douche canoes.

I'm sure you're right about that, and greatly appreciate today's English lesson, i.e., "douche canoe." I will use the term it as often as possible going forward :p
