Emission Label ?

About to pull the trigger on a second CT70. It's a 1978 so the CA. DMV is going to hassle me over CA. emissions. They tried to do it to me when registering my '77 recently, but the law is '77 and older, no emissions.

So, neither of these bikes (the seller has 2) have any type of emission label/sticker. I doubt they ever came with one, but that's why im coming here first. Anyone ever seen a bike with an emission label ?

I just registered a 1993 CT70 a month ago. It does have a label and the DMV wanted to see it. The label can be found underneath the seat. Yes, that is where Honda puts them.

Thanks Mike. Any chance you can take a picture of that decal? And when you say under the seat, do you mean the bottom of the seat or on the bike below the seat. Any chance anyone sells replacement emission labels ?

'79's were on the air cleaner canister so I'm assuming '78's to be the same.
Just completed a 100-point restoration of a one-owner `78; it had no emission compliance label. That said, it may well have come with one affixed to the air cleaner canister. I've had 2 `79s, over the years. One had no compliance label, the other had a metal tag affixed to the LH side of steering tube, opposite the VIN tag.

Little chance that you'll find anyone selling repopped EPA decals. However, it'd be easy enough to create an acceptable reproduction, as long as a decent photo can be found. As for the steering tube tag...unobtanium...probably more hassle & money than sourcing an earlier frame, or titling the bike in another state, then transferring it to PRC (People's Republic of California).

Correct, 1979 & 1980 pictured.

Tori, I don't have a camera so I can't get a picture for you. The sticker should look the same as any 1993 bike with CA smog. There is no VIN number on the decal. You can probably find one on ebay or a junkyard. Some tags are metal.
The decal is on the bottom of the seat so another CA seat would have a decal. The problem with that though is the decal has the year on it. I would do like racerx mentioned and look for another frame if it doesn't have a tag.

That's gonna be a tough one to repop aye ?

I did get a call into the California Air Resource Board today, and they were actually very helpful. After speaking with a supervisor, it sounds like from about 78-79 these emission labels were still in a "gray" area. Although they were required beginning with '78 models not all bikes came with them, and their presence was not being enforced till 1980

They told me not having one would not be a problem so long as the bike doesn't look like a reproduction that im trying to pass off as an old bike. It would be up to the discretion of the clerk and the titling may go into suspension till the paperwork gets reviewed higher up at the main DMV facility.

Fingers crossed i'm gonna pop for the '78 and play "the game" once more. Wish me luck !
