How hard is it to find an original HO engine?

There is a bike for sale that is mostly original, but had an engine swap and new exhaust added. How hard is it to find an original 1970 HO motor? What would it cost? Is it best to just steer clear and find an all original bike? I don't want to be looking for the Holy Grail and be on an eternal quest.

It is what you prefer, some guys buy an all original just to resto mod it, and the next guy pieces one back together, and other wait for the cream puff to show up.

It really depends on what you want i.e. a project to keep you busy, turnkey jump on and ride, how fast do you need to go or wnt to go? The biggest setback for some is the budget, what can you afford to spend?

IMO, to find a HK0 motor within + or - 500 of the frame number is going take some searching and patience, then once said motor is found how much will it take to properly rebuild? l'm not too up to date on rebuild prices lately, but I short while ago, I read around $1200 for a total motor restore done right and back to oem. Now don't get me wrong you could buy a complete original bike running and driving and still stick some coin into "freshening" it up.

Long story short, set an end goal of what you want, (complete? project? resto mod, etc) what are you going to do with the bike? putts around the neighbor hood? or camp ground? or tear ass across the city street? (the need for speed wont happen from an oem motor) then incorporate that into your budget. that is why post toilet paper pandemic the market is flooded with oem honda ct70 frames with aftermarket engines. fairly cheap to sand blast, prime and paint throw in a $250 125 lifan and boom you have a cheap motor and more speed.

I am an original guy. Price isn't really an issue. I'm shocked at how cheap the parts are for these things, both aftermarket and OEM. I remember trying to get a triple clamp for my Z50 in 1982 and the Honda dealer said they were not available, but if they were list was about $400. That would be about $1500+ in todays money!

I am used to car prices, and restoring cars, so these things are ridiculously cheap in comparison.

I have a short stack of H engines, and engine cases. If you want a "numbers matching" it's doable, but MIGHT take some time to find. Just a H engine...easy enough. If you could post the first 4-5 of the vin...someone here might have a match.

BTW...used H engines on eBay...might sell for 350-650...I think. Just to give you a general idea. Expect them to be whipped out tho...rebuildable core.
But they do NOT come up very often these days. eBay is kinda sad recently. A lot of folks are wheelin and dealin on Facebook, in the...many...various...mini trail pages.

This is the only eBay example that I could find.
