Large oil leak on CT70 H

Hi, I just pulled my 72 HK1 out of storage because of the nice weather up here in WI. I filled the gas tank, checked oil, etc. and it fired up on the second kick. I let it sit for 30 seconds or so, when a small oil leak started. I thought it may have been from when I checked the oil, so I put it in first so I could drive back to the garage. The clutch slipped a little, and the oil began to just dump out of the clutch cover/adjustment plate. Pulled the cover off, and the adjustment nut was loose and it was full of oil.

Anybody know what the cause is, and how I could fix it? Thanks

probably a good idea to replace both the shifter shaft and starter shaft seals. normally, they leak on a bike that old. also, there's an o ring on the clutch adjustment screw. also a good idea to replace. that's my best guess based on your description.

If you can see this pic, there is a oil seal right in the center. #16. Part # 91201-035-010 4aqady4e.jpg

I know that seal, it's a peach to replace, the right side case cover has to be gutted, all the linkage has to come out.

In theory it could be replaced with the right side case cover still installed on the engine, but if it's been a while since the slinger was cleaned... may as well go the distance and pull the case cover.

I hope you have better luck installing the clutch return spring than I did, scratched the cover pretty good.

Easy now, don't rip into it yet. Sometimes over a long dry winter these seals and the metal around them shrink up. Try to keep from over torquing stuff down in the cold as well. Let things warm up a bit and if it still leaks then go after it.

Best of luck.

Its odd... I parked the bike in November for storage and it ran flawlessly. I'll try again today seeing as though its 50° out. My hopes aren't too high- part #16 will be my next option. I just had the cover off last season, go figure. Is it likely that I could swap the seal without pulling the case apart, or should I plan on pullinh it off? Thanks

Maybe just dig down to it and see if the old one just popped out. Maybe you can just push it back in for a quick fix and a education. Then you can order up a replacement in case it still leaks.Consider ordering a complete set of seals for your bike so you're ready for the next one that goes.

If you've got a decent pick tool set to dig the seal out, you can do it with the case cover mounted. This seal is the smallest and thinnest of them all, shouldn't give much fuss.
