New build from nearly nothing

Hi. I'm new to this forum. Back in approx 1975, I had a ct70 k0 in Sapphire blue when I was 13 - I bought it for 80.00 dollars. Drove that thing everywhere; It was total freedom. So recently a friend was given 3 derelicts, and kindly gave me one of them. It looks like it was left out in the desert and scavenged. See attached image.

So, knowingly with little sense, I'm restoring this to its former glory. I'm keeping the original Ruby red. All stock except a piranha 140 engine will be added. I'll post as I complete sections of the bike.

Just want to say in advance thanks for all the great and helpful posts in this forum. It's really been helpful :)

P.s. I'm not new to restorations. I've restored a few motorcycles and cars in my time. Current toys are a 70 SS 396 El Camino, 75 HONDA 400F SS. 82 HONDA250R ATC.

Well, December 2015 was when I announced I was going to rebuild what was basically a frame, fork, rear swing arm and shocks.

Ha, only near 3 years later, I'm near done.

Some used hubs and brake pedals. New electrical and ignition. Well pretty much everything was needed. No need to list it all. I'm going for a resto-mod, but keep it stock like. My last purchase needed is a pirahna 140cc engine. I was able to find a performance muffler that's good to 180cc from CHP, but looks stock. The bikeis coming along rather nicely so far.

Question: can I use the stock throttle with a pirahna engine?

Depends on the carb I guess. I put a 125 Lifan in a K0 frame, the engine came with a carb and I dont remember any big problems. The only issue I still have with it is the throttle stays where I set it and it doesent "snap" back to idle, big engine, kinda need to be on top of that. ... so thats my excuse to not let anybody else ride it! lol

I have done 4 or 5 resto mods. Did them too quick, wish I would have taken my time and enjoyed the builds instead of thinking I needed to get them done quickly

Hi can Ctbale. Well, I didn't use the full three years. I actually started about 3 months a go on this little bike, but I only work on it when I have time or money. Prior to that I finished my El Camino's engine rebuild. Now I'm just anxious to ride the ct70.

If I were to change out the throttle to aftermarket, would I have to modify the handle bar? For instance, cut off the brake lever bracket?

I couldnt bring myself to cut off that perch, so stayed with the orig throttle design. works good. I had a little stronger spring I put in the carb which helped!

Cutting off the lever perch creates some problems that are costly to deal with. If you're going to take that route, may as well source new, perch-less, handlebars...that'll be cheaper.

The OEM internal twist grip throttle assembly, a.k.a. "CT70 cruise control" is finicky. That said, it's not as bad as one might believe, as long as everything in the chain is up-to-snuff. Some extra spring pressure is definitely a good thing.

Your right, cutting off a perch from a good set of old ct70 bars is just wrong. I had a hard time putting a lifan in a K0 frame, the only reason I did was it was reversible!

That, IMO, is the major dividing line...reversible vs non-reversible. Mechanically/structurally speaking, modifications that involve cutting & welding are a world apart from everything else, which are all bolt-ins. This includes engines that have the classic 49cc-pattern mounts.

The cheapo aftermarket remote throttle assy's can be used with the perch still attached...
It sticks out about 1 inch or so more, but not a deal breaker.
