What do you think the best penetrating oil is for those rusted or otherwise jammed up nuts and screws?

IOW- What do you use?:red70:

3 in 1 oil is good wd40 is good, the trick isnt really whats the best, because they are all almost exactly the same (that is cans/cans - sprays/sprays) but more that you put it on let it sit put more on let it sit etc. It has to have a chance to work. If you have something that is stubborn no matter what you tried,(ive tried this on my wife and it doesnt work in this case) is use heat. remeber heat expands metal. once you heat something up ,i mean almoset cherry red hot, then it will break loose any rust and you have a better chance. One word of caution with the heat. If you are trying to free a locknut, remember the plastic will melt ! ;)

Liquid Wrench is the old standby and PB Blast is the worthy newb. These two products work a little differently. L/W contains an acid, as I recall. These can take a few days, with heat applications in-between, to work in some cases. In extreme situations, fasteners can become permanently rusted together.

The best candidates for fatal rust-weld:

  • Handlebar nuts, some times one must choose between salvaging the handlebar or the nut and end up accomplishing neither

  • Axle nut, these can almost always be removed with heat & penetrating oil

  • Swigarm pivot bolt, pretty rare, but I have seen one so bad the even the bushings had to be replaced. Better to replace the swingarm.

Unless your bike is really rusty, you can expect to remove all of the rusted fasteners with little or no fanfare. If not, then check the frame carefully for rust perforations.
