Preference on gaskets

I would like to hear everyone’s opinion on gaskets. Please excuse my terminology because I know it’s wrong. The little bit I have been in this hobby I have preferred the “paper” type gaskets but that’s only because the motors that I have tore into that weren’t that “oily” had the paper type. The engines that Iv dealt with that seem to be super “oily” had the black “plastic” type gaskets. I totally understand that this could be coincidental. It seems that the “plastic”type seem to peel off super easy and the “paper” type you have to scrape off. So what’s everyone else’s opinion and preferences?

I don’t think they actually plastic they just seem like that. Iv attached a pic of the 2 types for reference.

Those are all paper style just different color.. different type paper? I would think yes but still paper..I’ve used both types and don’t think I’ve ever had a gasket leak after a rebuild. But I do use a micro thin layer of lock tight 518 gasket eliminator/gasket dressing..to both sides of parts for a clean, super seal job..

My only complaint has been how the bottom of the 3 spd clutch cover lines up. Seems like it could be a wider strip.

Also, where can i get just the center case gasket without buying the complete kit?

This one Iis for a 99 Z50...but I think it's basically the same part for the early models.

When I open up old engines...they all have black gaskets. So I always want to put black gaskets back in. I like the Vesra because I know they are quality...and their black.

If I building a big bore motor...I use a BB gasket kit. I've never had any problems with gaskets sealing. When I have leaks and such...it's always because of a mistake that I've made myself.

I pretty much oil up every gasket, both sides, to make it easier when I have to go back in

Don't some gaskets have issues with one of the oil pump gaskets being too thin and installing it makes the oil pump bind?

I don't recall a problem with them being too thin. But I do know that oil pumps changed some, at some point. You HAVE to make sure to use a gasket that matches the PUMP. Especially since we're sometimes using the bigger HV pumps.

Haven't rebuilt a motor in quite awhile but fairly certain I used a Vesrah gasket set and had a issue with the pump binding. Did a search for oil pump binding and looks like its been covered. Vesrah's pump gaskets are a little thinner, or maybe they were good for awhile, then changed for the worse? Seen here: https://lilhonda.com/index.php?threads/oil-pump-binding.22115/

Good info sir. I spose I must have missed that one completely.

Just a side note and I hope this doesn't violate too many federal laws, but if you ever end up needing some DIY paper gaskets, a great source of gasket material is a dollar bill. A set of hollow punches is essential and I oil the gasket before use.
