I made one from a cracked deep-well impact socket, similar to the PVC version shown in post #2. It was a real S.O.B. to cut and is magnetic which is sometimes a pain. PVC, or copper, tubing would be easier to cut and both are non-magnetic...ideal for ease of extracting the cotters with a rare earth magnet. A proper valve spring compressor would be easiest and quickest, if you don't mind paying what they cost.

I have this kit. It has done shovelhead valves and CT70 valves. I think I could even do smaller and larger if I needed to.

I used the Dr's version for a while. Great on stock springs. May have to grind the body to not hit. The other one, I use daily and love it.
For a one-time job, the pipe/socket/whatever works. If you're like me and don't get visitors, a drill press, with the table tilted can be useful.

I've used my PVC compressor on 3 heads now and it works good. Only drawback is you need a helper to install the keepers. Best part is that it cost only $1.50 to make.

That PVC works. I used a big C Clamp to hold the pieces in place, I only made the pieces about 1.5" long. Then I put the keepers in myself. What a nice tip that was whoever thought it up.

I got the one JP shows, ebay $40 delivered. works great, clamp it in the vice, and then just squeeze the valve springs, then you have both hands to pop out/in the little keepers. hey, if you think you will only use it once, you could sell it on ebay. I almost sold mine, glad I didnt, in the last 4 years, done about 10 engines!! (70cc to 250cc hondas)
