What the heck, wrong chain?

Hey all, Ive recently picked up an 81 C70 with a 125 Lifan, and it threw the chain the other day. I ordered in a new one but its at least 4" short. Online sources say 420-96 is the correct chain. My old chain ended up a tree somewhere and was never found. Is this supposed to fit a 96 link chain? The bike has 14-36 sprockets and the drive cog on the Lifan looks the same place as the stock Honda. What gives?

Beatrice confirms that 96 links of 420 chain is correct. Did you physically count the number of links and I am assuming that you adjusted the axle forward as much as possible. When I buy chains, they're always too long and I need to remove links.

X2...be sure to move the rear axle before cutting a new chain.

It's very common to put a new, larger front sprocket on when you go from 70cc to 125cc. The rear sprocket could have been changed too.

Yeah, this puppy is really too low geared for my liking. You have all those gears and you're already in 4th by 50kph. I was wondering about that. Any recommendations? And as for the chain, I'm an idiot who can't read; I accidentally ordered a 90-link chain instead of a 96 link. All the chains I was looking at were 96 and this one happened to be an oddball.
